Race

14.02 Hamilton told to back up the grid so he doesn't have too long a wait standing still.

14.00 The tyre warmers come off and the mechanics leave the grid. Formation lap underway. Lots of soft tyres on cars in the bottom 12 cars on the grid. Looks like Perez, Webber and Sutil are all on mediums, Hulkenberg has gone for softs, Button on mediums.

13.57 One change for the circuit since last year at the Hungaroring is a second DRS zone after the first corner. It seems like a very short straight, but overtaking moves that are not completed in turn one can often carry through to turns two and three so it may feature.

13.55 One change that will affect strategy this weekend is a new 80km/h speed limit in the pit lane. That means pit stops will take that little bit longer, so the drivers able to make one stop less will have a slightly bigger advantage than they had earlier in the season. It may seem like a small thing, but that can sway the result of a grand prix weekend.

13.51 Felipe Massa pours a bottle of water over his head before putting his fire-proof balaclava on. That's one way to keep cool.

13.50 Mark Webber says the key to his race will be finding some clear air to put some quick laps in.

13.48 Work has continued on Rosberg's car on the grid. He reported an odd feeling on his way to the grid and the team checked over his front suspension. It will be interesting to see how he copes at the start of this race.

13.47 Track temperature has now creeped up to 51C. Air temp is 34C. It's a very dry heat so maybe not as sweaty as it is for the drivers somewhere like Malaysia, but very hot nonetheless.

13.43 Rosberg has just arrived on the grid. Alonso is a late arrival too. Massa makes it to the grid late as well. Car temperatures are a concern today, Adrian Newey thinks some of the cars are arriving late to limit the build-up of heat on the grid.

13.40 Track temperature is up to 48C. That's about as high as it was yesterday in qualifying, but hotter than when the teams completed the long runs on Friday. So strategies will have to be decided as the race evolves.

13.37 Nico Rosberg has been called back to the pits. There could be a problem on his car and the Mercedes team has just eight minutes to fix it.

13.36 Practice starts are being performed at the end of the grid. With such a tight track here, the start is one of the best opportunities to make places. Everybody with an odd numbered grid slot is on the dirty side of the grid so in theory will be at a disadvantage - that includes Vettel.

13.35 Because they proved there was an issue with the car, Red Bull was allowed to break the parc ferme regulations and attempted to fix the problem overnight. However, Webber said he won't know if it's completely sorted until he heads out on the track, which is exactly what all the drivers are doing right now.

13.34 Other cars to watch out for from a strategy point of view are Perez and Webber, who will start from ninth and tenth but will be the highest placed drivers on the grid with medium tyres. That means that when the cars in front pit early on they will probably end up leading the race. Webber is driving one of the fastest cars on the grid but he's still not 100% sure his KERS and gearbox problems are fixed from yesterday.

13.33 A two stop is supposed to be the quickest strategy around here but it's doubtful many of the drivers will be able to manage that in this heat. Lotus probably stand the best chance of making a two stop work, but we're expecting a three-stop to be the most popular strategy.

13.31 Lewis Hamilton is on pole but nobody, least of all him, is expecting the Mercedes to be a serious contender for victory with its rear tyre degradation issues. However, Hamilton will still play a crucial rule in this race if he stays ahead of Vettel at turn one. If Vettel leads into turn one he might be able to scamper away, but Grosjean will also be looking to move ahead at Turn 1 from third on the grid, so it should be interesting.

13.30 Welcome to a very hot Hungaroring for the 2013 Hungarian Grand Prix. We'll have lap-by-lap coverage of the race, which promises to be an interesting one after a tight qualifying session.

Lap 1

Hamilton makes a good start and leads Vettel and Grosjean into turn one. Rosberg made a good start but now falls back.

Rosberg runs wide at Turn 3 and makes contact with Massa in Turn 5. After a great start he is freefalling down the pack.

Lap 2

Hamilton leads by 1.1s on the first lap. Vettel holds second ahead of Grosjean, Alonso up to fourth after a good start. Raikkonen still down in sixth behind Massa.

Webber is up to seventh and the highest placed man on medium tyres ahead of Button in the McLaren.

Lap 3

Vettel is already reeling Hamilton in and has the gap at the front down to 0.5s. Grosjean is 1.1s off Vettel. Alonso another 2.5s back.

Lap 4

Hamilton still keeping Vettel at bay with a 0.7s gap despite the DRS now being in operation. Grosjean falls to 1.3s off Vettel.

Hamilton is looking good so far, I was a bit worried after the second lap, but he appears to have his tyres under control ... for now.

Lap 5

The DRS is doing nothing for Vettel down the straight. Hamilton appears to have better straightline speed from his Mercedes engine.

Webber has a bit of a gap to Raikkonen developing, but he is on the medium tyres. At some stage there will be a crossover when the mediums resilience outweighs the short spark of performance the softs offer.

Lap 6

Raikkonen is all over the back of Massa, but it's so difficult to pass here. Raikkonen really need to find a way past if he want to challenge for a win today.

Vettel has dropped to 1.4s off Hamilton, maybe making a mistake. Grosjean is now in DRS range of the Red Bull.

Lap 7

Again the DRS isn't enough for Grosjean to make a difference to Vettel's lead, but this is positive for the Lotus at the moment. If he can stay in touch then he has a genuine shot at victory this afternoon.

Webber is starting to show good pace and matching Raikkonen's time. But Raikkonen is still being held up by Massa.

Lap 8

Hamilton now leads by 1.8s. This is all starting to look rather positive for the Mercedes. Grosjean is 0.9s off Vettel. Vettel has a 5.6s lead over Alonso. It looks like Ferrari doesn't have the race pace right now and that is really hurting Raikkonen, who is bottled up behind both and in a much faster car.

Really Raikkonen will have to try a two stop if he wants any chance of challenging for the win.

Lap 9

Massa has lost the front wing endplate in that clash with Rosberg at Turn 5 on the first lap. That explains why Raikkonen is all over the back of him, but he still can't find a way past.

Vergne and van der Garde have pitted. Will we see some stops at the front of the pack soon?

Lap 10

Hamilton pits now. Medium tyres go on in a slick pit stop. That's what we expected but he has come out behind Button who is on the medium tyres. That's very bad news for Hamilton who is likely to get stuck behind the McLaren. Vettel all of a sudden looks in a very strong position.

Lap 11

Vettel stays out for another lap and sets a 1:28.5. That's 0.4s faster than Button's last lap, so if Hamilton can't find a way past he will lose a lot of time.

Grosjean is now looking very racey behind Vettel.

Hamilton does pass Button. Crucial move for him further down the pack.

Lap 12

Vettel now pits and Grosjean stays out. Hamilton is in clear air as Red Bull make a slick stop.

Hamilton does hold on ahead of Vettel, and the Red Bull comes out behind Button. Now he will have to pass Button to stop himself losing out to Grosjean.

Vettel's in lap was very bad so it looks like Red Bull kept him out one lap too long on the softs.

Lap 13

Alonso pits, which leaves the two Lotuses out in front in clean air. If they want to to so a two stop they need to set consistent times now.

Vettel is still stuck behind Button and this is not good for his race.

Lap 14

Grosjean pits. It looks like the two stop is not on. Raikkonen also pits. Lotus do well to get the cars out without any issues, but Raikkonen comes out behind Massa, who is in a battle with Sutil who hasn't stopped.

Vettel is still stuck behind Button and losing roughly 0.5s to Hamilton a lap. This is looking good for Mercedes at the moment.

Lap 15

Vettel also warned his car is overheating behind Button's. Grosjean is now closing again, but it's clear that Lotus' strategy has not really paid off unless they can do the rest of this race with one stop.

Lap 16

Webber leads but has not pitted. He's 5.3s ahead of Hamilton who has. Button another 3.9s back and Vettel attacks him into Turn 2. The move is not on and the Red Bull backs off. Now Grosjean is right on the tail of Vettel.

Lap 17

Vettel just does not have the pace to trouble Button in the DRS zone on the pit straight. But he does attempt to pass into turn two again and just falls short. Grosjean attacks the off line Vettel into Turn 4 but there is no way past there.

Lap 18

Vettel told to back off again in the middle sector and now has damage to his car after trying that move on Button. It didn't look like there was contact from our camera angle but clearly there was.

Vettel told to turn down the wick on his engine too. Overheating issues for Vettel as Hamilton streaks away, 6.3s down the road.

Lap 19

Grosjean attempts to pass Vettel into turn one. Grosjean gets hung out on the outside, tries to undercut the Red Bull but hasn't got the traction. He tries again into turn two but is again hung out to dry.

The battle continues to turn four but no way past there. Alonso is on the back of this battle now.

Lap 20

Vettel struggling now with a damaged front wing and down on power.

Raikkonen, meanwhile passes Massa for eighth. That was crucial and he now needs to make that count.

Sutil is out of the race by the looks of it. He couldn't get away from the pits and the team radio says it was a hydraulic failure.

Lap 21

Webber, who hasn't pitted, leads Hamilton by 4.3s. Button is 8.2s off but hasn't pitted either, he is expected to come in at any time, Vettel is 9.6s off Hamilton now and Grosjean is still on his tail with Alonso keeping a watching brief.

Raikkonen is shifting now and has a 3.9s gap to Perez. From there he needs to find another 10.9s to catch Alonso.

Lap 22

Vettel is now closing on Button again so maybe the McLaren is starting to suffer with its tyres. Vettel will be managing the damage to his car with his differential settings and at the moment it seems to be working.

Lap 23

Hamilton is now 3.3s ahead of Webber and we just saw a replay of his crucial move on Button. He passed him into turn one and then had to defend into turn two. He kept it all together and that is the reason he is so far ahead now.

Lap 24

Webber pits. It's a clean stop and he comes out behind Alonso but ahead of Raikkonen. Crucial for his race, that's worked well.

Vettel passes Button on the inside of Turn 4. That was crucial and very brave. Button makes contact as he passes at the chicane. Grosjean should have given Button more space and Button complains of damage as he pits. No sign of any wing chances and he heads back out.

Lap 25

Button took on soft tyres, which is a different strategy to Webber. The stewards may take a look at that move by Grosjean. It looked like his fault.

Lap 26

Grosjean pits. The first of the front runners to make a second stop. Maybe he had a slow puncture after that contact. That was not in the scripts for him and he comes out ahead of Button.

Button is on the soft tyres and Grosjean is on the mediums. This could get tasty, but the Lotus is fundamentally a quicker car.

Lap 27

Vettel is now 13.3s off Hamilton and gaining on the Mercedes. Adrian Newey and chief Red Bull mechanic Kenny Handkammer were just talking in the garage, I suspect assessing the damage to that front wing.

The stewards are investigating Grosjean. The Lotus driver was definitely to blame for the contact so I can see that being a penalty.

Lap 28

Hamilton is going as fast as he can but Vettel is still fastest. The gap is 12.7s. Alonso is 4.0s behind Vettel and has Webber on his tail now. The No.2 Red Bull looks much faster and is on fresher tyres.

Raikkonen is 6.6s off Webber and may still be attempting a two stop. Worth keeping an eye on him.

Lap 29

Vettel is on the move and takes another 0.5s out of Hamilton. Hamilton leads by 12.3s so has a nice gap, but the Red Bull is definitely quicker.

Grosjean pulls a brilliant move on Massa around the outside of Turn 4. Fantastic move and very well judged. Bets move of the race so far and crucial for his race.

Lap 30

Gutierrez has retired from the race. The heat appears to be taking its toll.

Hamilton still leads by 12.2s. Alonso is now 4.9s off Vettel but has Webber looming large in his mirrors.

Lap 31

Button is now attacking Massa, who appears to be struggling on these tyres. He gets the move done into the turn six/seven chicane.

Lap 32

Hamilton pits. It's another clean pit stop and he comes out behind Webber, but ahead of Raikkonen, which is crucial if the Lotus is two stopping.

Massa also pits. His tyres were clearly finished.

Lap 33

So Vettel now leads by 6.9s from Alonso, who is 1.1s ahead of Webber. Hamilton is 1.1s behind the second Red Bull and will need to find a way past so as not to be held up.

Grosjean is also under investigation for leaving the track at turn four when he passed Massa. That seems a bit harsh. Lots of drivers leave the track around here and nothing is ever done.

Lap 34

Hamilton attacks Webber in the final corner as the Red Bull makes a mistake. They came very close and the Mercedes has to jam on the brakes.

Hamilton gets the move sorted in turn three. Great pas and now Hamilton is on the back of Alonso. He really wants to win this race today and is pulling some amazing overtaking moves out there to get it done.

Lap 35

Alonso pits, freeing up Hamilton.

Vettel also pitted, a fairly slow stop. Vettel comes out behind Button again! It's like groundhog day for the Red Bull driver. Meanhwile, Hamilton is back in the lead and in clean air.

Lap 36

Hamilton sets the fastest lap of the race and leads by 1.2s from Webber. Raikkonen is 1.7s off Webber and if he is two-stopping is very much in contention. Vettel is now behind Grosjean too.

Grosjean has been given a drive-through though for leaving the track as he passed Massa. That seems very unfair.

Lap 37

Vettel clears Button with ease down the pit straight as Button's tyres struggle. Grosjean is out of the running now so Vettel's next target is Raikkonen, 12.7s ahead.

Lap 38

Grosjean serves his penalty now. Button also pits.

Lap 39

Webber is now 1.5s off Hamilton. Raikkonen is 3.3s back in third. Vettel is 10.2s off Raikkonen and gaining at a considerable rate of nearly 1.5s a lap.

Lap 40

Grosjean has rejoined behind Alonso and is attacking the Ferrari again. It's almost like somebody has pressed the reset button on his race and he now has to do it all over again.

Lap 41

Hamilton sets another fastest lap and is 2.4s ahead of Webber now. Raikkonen is losing time to Webber now and is only 8.1s ahead of Vettel. He is on a two-stop strategy but it's going to require some finesse to make it work.

Lap 42

Grosjean is attacking Alonso again as the Lotus team come out into the pits and then return to the garage without calling in one of their drivers.

Hamilton is looking fantastic right now out in front. Nobody expected him to have it so easy today, but events have helped him so far.

Lap 43

Raikkonen pits and takes on another set of mediums. That should be his last stop as he rejoins in sixth. It's 27 laps until the end of the race so he is going to have to nurse those tyres to try to last the distance.

Lap 44

Webber pits for mediums which means he has to stop again. He hasn't taken on the softs yet.

Hamilton now leads Vettel by 15.7s, which is a very healthy lead at this stage.

Webber told to push to try to make this strategy work. He will come in a few laps before the end for a sprint on the softs.

Lap 45

Bottas retires with a smoky Williams. That's right in the firing line of the final corner. The marshals are all with the car, but that's a slightly dangerous situation. No sign of a safety car yet.

Lap 46

Vettel is matching Hamilton's times now, 15.2s is the gap.

Webber rejoined in third and is 3.5s ahead of Alonso and Grosjean. Raikkonen is 4.8s off the battle but his race is all about tyre management if he is going to make this strategy work and his lap times reflect that.

Lap 47

Bottas' car has been removed and the DRS has now been re-enabled on the pit straight.

Hamilton still holding his lead at 15.2s he will be very grateful there was no safety car.

Lap 48

Raikkonen would have been praying for a safety car to protect his tyres and close up the pack.

Grosjean back in the pits now. He was losing time behind Alonso so a stop made sense but it was a slow one for the Lotus crew and he comes out behind Button.

Lap 49

Button is attempting a two-stop according to his team radio.

Alonso pits for mediums once more. Alonso rejoins ahead of the Button/Grosjean battle so keeps his place despite Lotus' best efforts to undercut him.

Lap 50

Hamilton leads Vettel by 15.4s so still a very healthy lead. Webber is 6.0s off his team-mate and Raikkonen is 10.4s off Webber. He has now picked up his pace.

Grosjean passes Button at turn three.

Lap 51

Hamilton pits. A fairly quick one and Hamilton comes out just behind Webber. Mercedes would really have wanted him to come out ahead of the Red Bull.

But Hamilton fights back and passes Webber in Turn 3. Fantastic move and crucial for his race. Webber could have done his team-mate a favour by staying in front, but once again Hamilton shows how much he wants a win with a fantastic move.

Lap 52

Vettel is now 7.1s ahead of Hamilton, but should have to pit again. Raikkonen is another one to watch as he closes the gap to Webber to 7.5s. He's only 16.7s off Vettel so might be able to stay ahead when Vettel pits. But then the Red Bull will be on much fresher rubber and able to attack.

Lap 53

Alonso is 16.8s off and Raikkonen but has made all his pit stops too.

Lap 54

Webber is now getting the hammer down, he will be hoping to stay ahead of Alonso when he has to make his final stop.

Grosjean, meanwhile, is 1.2s off Alonso and will also fancy his chances of beating the Ferrari.

Lap 55

Hamilton is lapping faster than Vettel now, so if the Red Bull has to pit again it would make sense to do it soon.

Lap 56

Vettel pits now. He comes out behind Raikkonen. If Raikkonen can go until the end of the race this could get interesting.

Lap 57

Hamilton leads Webber by 2.7s.

Vettel told Raikkonen won't pit again but reminded his tyres are 13 laps fresher than the Lotus'. It should be a good battle and crucial for the championship. 3.0s is the gap right now, but Raikkonen's lap times aren't disastrous.

Lap 58

Vettel sets the fastest lap of the race and closes the gap to 2.2s to Raikkonen. He is pushing very hard right now. Red Bull on full attack.

Grosjean is 0.6s off Alonso now.

Lap 59

Hamilton told to change his differential settings, but responds: "Hey man! I'm trying to concentrate. I'm happy with the car as it is right now!"

Vettel has the gap down to 1.2s now to Raikkonen. He's a second a lap faster right now.

Lap 60

Webber pits. Soft tyres go on for the last ten laps. He comes out ahead of Alonso. Good work by Red Bull there. He should hold that until the end of the race.

Hamilton told that all temperatures look good. He's 10.4s ahead of Raikkonen in second at the moment. He's told he can go 0.5s slower to make things comfortable.

Lap 61

Webber is told he can now attack Vettel and Raikkonen ahead. This battle for second is about to get very, very interesting. Raikkonen on old mediums, Vettel on newish mediums and Webber on brand new softs.

Lap 62

Webber has a gap of 10.7s to Vettel, who is all over the back of Raikkonen. But it's not going to be easy for Vettel. We saw him struggle with Button earlier and the Red Bull is not fast on the straight.

Lap 63

Hamilton still holds a 10.8s lead at the front. He can afford to take it easy now.

Vettel drops to 1.4s off Raikkonen. Maybe his car is overheating again. Webber, meanwhile, is struggling to make an impression on the 10.1s gap to Vettel.

Lap 64

Alonso is still struggling with Grosjean behind him. 0.5s remains the gap.

Raikkonen is still 1.5s ahead of Vettel. Maybe the Red Bull will wind it in for one last blast in the final laps.

Now Webber is shifting. He's 8.3s off Vettel now.

Lap 65

Hamilton extends his lead to 11.1s as Vettel reels in Raikkonen again. He's not close enough in sector one, where most of the overtaking opportunities are. But he is close in sector two, where it's nearly impossible to pass.

Lap 66

Rosberg is out with a Mercedes engine failure from the right bank of the engine.

He parks it in a run off area so no worries of a safety car. Not a good omen for Hamilton though.

Vettel still can't find a way past Raikkonen. Grosjean remains behind Alonso. Those are our two battles.

Lap 67

Webber's push is over, he's dropped to 9.5s off Vettel. Both Red Bulls are told "fail 22, fail". I'm not sure what that is code for.

Vettel does appear to have dropped off Raikkonen.

Lap 68

Hamilton leads by 11.4s from Raikkonen. Vettel can't use KERS to close the gap at the moment and locks a wheel so is still pushing hard.

Vettel attempts to go around the outside of Turn 4 but can't make it stick. He ends up well off the track.

Lap 69

Vettel whinges over the radio about Raikkonen not leaving enough space, but there was absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Hamilton still leads by 11.5s. Raikkonen told to save KERS for the final lap.

Lap 70

Hamilton wins his first race for Mercedes! Raikkonen comes home second on a great two-stop strategy. Vettel third ahead of Webber.

Raikkonen stops on track as he crosses the line.

Niki Lauda says Hamilton at his best he has seen in his life.

Hamilton said he would need a miracle to win here. In the end he made it look easy.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Hamilton starts his final lap in the lead.

Raikkonen looks comfortably ahead of Vettel. Vettel closes into Turn 4 again but can't pass there and locks up into the chicane.

Alonso still ahead of Grosjean.

Hamilton celebrates with Ross Brawn. This is a huge win for Hamilton, who received so much criticism when he left McLaren for Mercedes last year.

Hamilton and Raikkonen shake hands. They didn't see each other all afternoon but still finished first and second.

Ross Brawn points out that Maldonado scored Williams' first point of the season. We rather lost sight of that with everything that was happening at the front.
