With Kimi Raikkonen taking victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix and Fernando Alonso finishing out of the points, this race was crucial for Raikkonen's championship hopes.
Alonso clashed with Ralf Schumacher's Toyota at the first corner with the front wing of the Renault becoming lodged underneath. Alonso struggled round to the end of the lap to seek a replacement and tumbled down the order and out of the points in 11th place. Raikkonen led from Michael Schumacher's Ferrari, the car looking like a competitive proposition for the first time in many races.
With a shorter middle stint, with the car light on fuel, Raikkonen built his gap over Schumacher and held on to win with not one, but two Schumachers on the podium: Ralf was third for Toyota despite his lap one coming-together with Alonso.
It was a far better day than of late for Toyota with Jarno Trulli fourth in the second car. The championship situation left Alonso 26 points ahead of Raikkonen.
