Hamilton not expecting to fight with Red Bull
Lewis Hamilton is preparing himself for a race with the Lotuses and Ferraris at the Indian Grand Prix after admitting Red Bull looks too far ahead during Friday practice.
Hamilton set the fourth fastest time in second practice but was still over 0.5s off the pace of Sebastian Vettel's fastest time. He is hoping to challenge for a top four grid slot on Saturday, but admitted Red Bull looks set to dominate again.
"Top five [on the grid], I hope! Second row would be good," he said. "The car feels good but there are some areas we can improve for sure.
"With the race pace, it's going to be very hard to beat them [Red Bull] because they always pull away. We'll do the best we can because we really want to get second in the constructors' championship and that means beating Lotus and Ferrari. They are the two toughest competitors for where we are targeting. Lotus has really improved so we need to beat them."
Hamilton said he was determined to secure second in the constructors' for his team in Brackley.
"I don't want to think about what it will mean if we do it, I just want to work towards it. For the guys back at the factory, they are working had every day and this is their dream to make this step. Last year was not such a good year for them as well as the previous year. I think this year they deserve a lot better."
Hamilton had a close call at the start of the first practice session when he scraped the pit wall exiting the pit lane, but was able to laugh it off at the end of the day.
"I wasn't expecting that! A great way to start the weekend, I came out of the garage and hit the wall -it was quite funny!"
