Esteban Gutierrez has been handed a 20-second post-race penalty for his clash with Romain Grosjean during the Italian Grand Prix.

Gutierrez moved across and made contact with Grosjean on the approach to the Rettifilo chicane on the penultimate lap but came off worse, suffering a punctured right rear tyre. Gutierrez had to limp back to the pit lane and finished 19th, but after the race was relegated to 20th after the stewards issued the penalty.

The stewards found Gutierrez to blame for the crash but also accepted "the explanation of the team that the car was suffering brake issues", possibly preventing a harsher penalty. Sauber team principal Monisha Kaltenborn seemed unimpressed with the incident, saying it had been "unnecessary".

Gutierrez, meanwhile, said: "It was not on purpose to move my line, definitely, but this is how it was - an unfortunate moment but we have to move forward."
