Cosworth has confirmed that next year's Lotus car is unlikely to be powered by its engines.

Lotus team owner Tony Fernandes hinted after the Italian Grand Prix that a deal had been struck for the team to use Renault V8 engines next year and the British independent engine maker said on Sunday that an agreement had been reached 'in principle' to part company.

"Cosworth has reached an agreement in principle with Lotus Racing whereby the team's Cosworth engine supply agreement will come to a conclusion at the end of the current Formula One season," read the Cosworth statement.

"This agreement is subject to contract and until the agreement is signed, neither party will be making any further comment."

It is believed that Cosworth, who also supply engines for Williams, Virgin Racing and HRT, would like to sign another customer team for 2011.
