Sergey Sirotkin believes he is ready to make the step up to Formula One if the opportunity arises next year.

Sirotkin got his first outing at a grand prix weekend on home turf in Russia on Friday as he took over Esteban Gutierrez's Sauber for first practice. He set a respectable time just over 0.4s off his team-mate Adrian Sutil on his second outing in the car following Bahrain testing earlier this year.

When asked if he was ready to make the step up to F1, he said: "Definitely. I felt it after Bahrain as well, but that wasn't really a proper run. Here it is a much better chance to compare and I would say it was a bit of a surprise to me that it was easier and I was closer than I thought. I feel myself more than ready, I just need the chance."

Sirotkin said his management are working on finding him a place in F1 but there was no news as to when he would be in the car next.

"We are working on that and getting a seat for next year. We are working so that as soon as we get a decision we can think about some extra options. At the moment I can't say anything officially.

"Motorsport in Russia is progressing quite well and just this weekend we have made a big step forward. It helps to attract the people and to make them interested in motor racing. It's a positive any way you look at it."
