Qualifying

Welcome back to ESPNF1's live commentary of the Singapore Grand Prix weekend. Qualifying is just 30 minutes away and after final practice we've got a good battle shaping up. McLaren looks like it can take the fight to Red Bull, even if Vettel is still the clear favourite for pole, and Alonso is pushing his Ferrari to within an inch of its life round here.

In final practice Webber was fastest by 0.027s from Button, so those two will fancy their chances of getting in on the act. Hamilton had a scrappy end to his session and damaged the car's diffuser over one of the kerbs, but that will all be fixed for Q1 and he will be eyeing his first pole of the season.

Vettel has taken 10 poles this season and the other three belong to his Red Bull team-mate Webber.

This circuit is one of the most challenging on the calendar for the drivers and the chicane at turn 10 is one area where the drivers try to find as much time as possible. But the difference between getting it right and wrong is very small, as Jaime Alguersuari found out this morning.

Fortunately he managed to land the car without any major damage and completed his lap. But in recent years some drivers haven't been so lucky.

Ferrari's latest tweet: "Meteo France said that no rain is expected."

So despite the thunderstorms forecast ahead of the weekend it looks like it will remain dry.

Martin Whitmarsh tells the BBC that we haven't seen the best of Hamilton yet. The McLaren team principal also says that he thinks Vettel is "quite strong" and doesn't appear overly confident about snatching pole from Red Bull.

Lotus chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne says: "8 mins to go before qualifying. FP3 difficult for us as didn't get a laptime from the supersofts. Quali will be better"

Track temperature is down slightly to 31C with air temperature still at a sweaty 30C. Hunidity is 70%.

Carlos Marquez says: "Alonso will win! Jaime top 10!" via Facebook. No prizes for guessing where he is watching the action from.

Force India are hoping for a good result: "Not long to go now until qualy begins. This will be one of the most important sessions of the year as track position is all important."

It's 22:00 local time and the session is underway.

Barrichello is the first man out on track in his Williams. Sauber's Perez is also heading out.

Hamilton and Vettel are the first of the big hitters to get out on track. They are looking to make Q2 without using a set of supersoft tyres and judging by the gap in practice from front to back they should do it easily.

Barrichello is pushing hard on his first lap with a puff of smoke from his front right wheel into turn nine. There's already some traffic out there and he's come across a couple of cars on his lap as he crosses the line with a 1:51.042.

Perez goes quicker on his first attempt in the Sauber.

Vettel is now on his first timed lap ... and goes fastest with a 1:47.137.

Hamilton is faster than Vettel on his first attempt on soft tyres and Button is quicker than the both of them with a 1:46.993 - a good lap on the soft compound tyres.

Vettel responds with a 1:46.397 which is very competitive indeed.

Alonso sets the fourth fastest time as Hamilton clocks the quickest first sector yet.

Hamilton has lost a huge amount of time in sector two and heads back to the pits. His position should be safe.

A replay shows that Hamilton had a huge lock up into turn seven, which accounts for his poor middle sector.

Button reports that he is struggling with understeer and his team reassures him that it can be cured with a couple of turns of front wing.

Schumacher completes a committed final sector to pop up to eighth position. A replay shows that he took lots of kerb in turn 10 too, but the Mercedes remained on the deck.

At the moment Petrov is in the drop zone and slower than Kovalainen, but he should be much quicker on the supersoft tyres.

Lots of work going on on the bottom of Hamilton's car after he went over the exit kerb at turn seven for the second time today. Looks like more damage but they must be confident they will get the car back out for Q2.

Buemi improves to 12th ahead of Schumacher who is still in the pits and won't complete another run.

Petrov is still in the drop zone and is on his last timed lap of Q1. He's going faster and could drop Senna into the bottom seven.

Petrov only improves to 17th so it will be one of the Renaults that goes out in Q1. Senna is on slightly better lap ... and improves to 15th. Petrov is out in Q1.

Proof that Renault is really struggling here this weekend. Petrov was just over a tenth off Maldonado in 17th and just over a second ahead of Kovalainen in 19th.

At the very back of the grid Ricciardo outqualified team-mate Liuzzi for the second race in the row. Liuzzi has a five-place grid penalty for tomorrow but it won't make any difference as he's starting last.

Senna was almost a second faster than Petrov which will be a mini victory for him in just their third race as team-mates.

Hamilton is the first out in Q2 so whatever the problem was with the car it has now been fixed.

Webber has opted to head straight out on the supersofts.

Webber's Red Bull looks very composed over the kerbs at turn 10 but is understeering a little in the the faster corners.

Webber sets a 1:45.651 on supersofts. Button responds with a 1:45.472. Hamilton is on softs and set a 1:46.829.

Kobayashi has hit the barriers at turn 10 after launching the car over those kerbs. Both front wheels were a couple of feet off the ground. He's fine but that's the end of his session and he will start from 17th. The red flag is out to allow the car to be cleared.

Meanwhile Vettel went fastest before the red flag came out with a 1:44.931, roughly 0.5s quicker than Button.

The right front suspension and front wing are demolised on Kobayashi's Sauber. The rear right suspension is also damaged.

The session is back underway with nine minutes remaining. Massa heads straight out on the supersofts as he hasn't set a time yet.

Schumacher and Rosberg are also back on track as they haven't set a time either. Everyone else is sitting tight ahead of one last-minute run.

Massa is 0.6 off Vettel through sector two ... and goes fifth fastest overall as he crosses the line, over a second off Vettel.

Hamilton has gone back out on supersoft tyres after just setting a soft tyre lap before Kobayashi's accident.

Ferrari says: "A very good lap from Felipe, on used tyres"

The two Williams, Toro Rossos, Saubers and Senna are in the drop zone right now.

Di Resta and Sutil in the Force Indias are in the top 10.

Hamilton limps back to the pits with a right rear puncture. That's one set of tyres gone for the race but he should be OK to make Q3 with his current time.

Perez pops up into tenth to drop di Resta out but the Force India immediately responds to take that Q3 position back. Very close, but both Force Indias are in the top ten.

Di Resta snuck through to Q3 by 0.3s ahead of Perez but was roughly 0.4s off team-mate Sutil.

The two Ferraris and Button are the first out for Q3 after queueing in the pit lane. Hamilton is also back out on track on a new set of supersoft tyres. He only has two sets left after that puncture.

Hamilton is looking for a way past Massa on the out lap and they nearly come together. They all find some space in the end behind Button and get their hot laps underway.

Mercedes and Force India drivers are still in the pits so will only do one run in Q3.

Button clocks a respectable 1:44.928 but Hamilton is quicker on a 1:44.809.

Vettel is comfortably fastest, however, on a 1:44.381. Nobody else comes close at the moment but Vettel is told to push on his in-lap to get back to the pits for another lap.

Massa aborted his lap and will run again before the end of the session.

Webber could only manage the fourth fastest time and was a nearly a full second off Vettel.

Rosberg leaves the pits for his single run. Massa is also back out.

Hamilton won't go again as he's run out of time and the Force India's have also decided not to run.

Of course Hamilton will save one set of fresh supersofts as a result, which after that puncture he picked up.

Webber sets a very quick first sector ... Vettel can't match him but it's the rest of the lap where Vettel is really quick.

Webber is just off Vettel's time in sector two.

Webber misses out by 0.3 seconds from Vettel's earlier time. Button improves but can't beat the Red Bulls and Hamilton drops to fourth.

It's an all-Red Bull front row with Vettel well and truly on top. Button's best effort was roughly 0.4s off pole position and just 0.005s up on Hamilton.

Schumacher didn't set a time in the end and will start eighth behind Rosberg.

Ferrari says: "Felipe did his job: sixth is at the moment the best he can achieve."

So Vettel takes his 11th pole of the season and Red Bull seals its fifth front-row lock out. We're hoping the race will be a more competitive affair, make sure you join us for every lap on Sunday. In the meantime we'll bring you all the news from the paddock this evening.
