Tyres cost me a shot at Kimi - Massa
Felipe Massa said he had hoped to try to pass Kimi Raikkonen for second at the Spanish Grand Prix but had to back off when he started to struggle with oversteer on his final set of tyres.
Massa finished 17 seconds off Raikkonen at the end of the race but felt he would stand a chance of reeling in the Lotus when he first left the pits for his final stint.
"It was a great race. I was not happy yesterday after the penalty and the drop of three positions back, but I knew I had a good car, a good pace and the start and the first lap was amazing. I was overtaking cars on the track and I anticipated the first stop to get ahead of other cars.
"Then the situation was all about not using so much of the tyres and I was sure the last stint would be the best. But I don't know what happened because I had oversteer in the last stint. I was catching Kimi by over one second a lap but then it was not possible when the car started oversteering and it was a bit strange to be honest. But it was a great race for all of us."
Massa said Ferrari needed to work on its one-lap pace ahead of Monaco in order to qualify further up the grid.
"I think we need to work on the car for Monaco. We know we don't have the quickest car in qualifying and maybe in Monaco that will be a problem, but we need to try to do the best we can and we'll concentrate 100% on that."
