Timo Glock, Lucas di Grassi, Vitaly Petrov and Karun Chandhok will all be demoted five places on the grid for Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix for regulation infringements on Saturday.

The Virgin Racing drivers received their grid penalties after the team failed to notify the FIA about its intended gear ratios in time. Regulations stipulate that F1 teams are obliged to notify the FIA's technical delegate about the gear ratios that the team will be using for the rest of the weekend within two hours of the end of Friday's free practice session. It is something Virgin Racing failed to do.

Renault's Petrov and HRT's Chandhok will also drop five places after needing gearbox changes ahead of qualifying on Saturday.

Petrov crashed at Turn 4 during Friday's practice session, damaging the rear of the car and his Renault after swiping the barriers. Renault decided that a new gearbox needed to be fitted but with the change in breach of F1's technical regulations, Petrov will also drop down the order after qualifying.
