Andy Murray's bid to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals was thwarted by the weather as his fourth-round clash with Marin Cilic was abandoned on Monday after heavy rain at the All England Club.

Murray was leading 7-5 3-1 when they were forced off Court One on Monday afternoon and shortly after 7:45pm it was confirmed that play on the outside courts had been abandoned for the day.

With poor weather forecast for most of the day, Murray followed world No. 1 Maria Sharapova onto Court One after the top seed was ousted by Sabine Lisicki.

Play continued around the courts in spite of light drizzle, but when the weather worsened, tournament referee Andrew Jarrett made the call to shut the roof on Centre Court, meaning Victoria Azarenka could complete a straight sets victory over Ana Ivanovic, with only a brief delay to close the roof.

Murray was firmly in the ascendancy when the rain set in - the British No. 1 had recovered from a sluggish start which saw him drop his opening service game. However, he grabbed a late break to snatch the opening set before breaking his Croatian opponent to take control of the second set.

Murray and Cilic will return to the court on Tuesday to complete their match, while the winner's quarter-final opponent did not step on court, with Juan Martin Del Potro's fourth-round clash with David Ferrer - abandoned until Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has a battle on his hands if he is to reach the quarter-finals after he dropped the opening set to Mardy Fish. The American was leading 6-4 1-1 when play was suspended.
