Andy Murray is fast becoming the hottest property in the men's draw at Wimbledon after he blitzed Gilles Simon 6-1 6-4 6-4 to reach the fourth round.
Having witnessed Rafael Nadal go to five sets for the second time in three matches, much like Roger Federer did in his opening two rounds, Murray arrived on court late on Saturday evening ready to stamp down a marker on the tournament. The British No. 1 has been in horrible form since appearing in the Australian Open final, but on the green grass of home he is slowly making the nation believe.
Of the top seeds in the competiton, only Robin Soderling can claim to be in better form than Murray, having come through his first three matches without dropping his serve. However, Murray has dropped only 19 games in his last two matches, and he did not face a single break point against Simon.
Murray stormed out of the blocks, breaking Simon on the opening service game to take a 3-0 lead, and never looked in danger of surrendering his advantage. He converted all three of his break point opportunities to take the opening two sets, and although Simon put up more of a fight in the third, it was merely delaying the inevitable.
Simon produced moments of brilliance to save five break points in the final set, but Murray grabbed a timely break to go 5-4 up in the fifth, and closed out the match in an hour and 50 minutes.
"I'm just aiming to keep playing better," Murray told the BBC. "Obviously matches are going to get tougher but the first week was very good - three straight sets wins, and with the way I was playing coming in, that's a very good start for me.
"To have conserved a lot of energy, I worked really hard the week before Wimbledon because I hadn't played that many matches, I spent a lot of time on the practice court and in the gym, so it's nice to have some quick matches."
Murray will now play Sam Querrey, who won Queen's, in round four after the American beat Xavier Malisse 6-7(4) 6-4 6-2 5-7 9-7.
