Jake Shields has warned Georges St-Pierre not even to waste his time attempting a submission when the pair collide in the UFC 129 main event on Saturday.

Shields has not lost since 2004, and he has never been submitted in a career spanning over 10 years. The Cesar Gracie Jiu Jitsu fighter is widely regarded as the best grappler in the 170lb division, having outworked Dan Henderson in a recent Strikeforce outing.

St-Pierre, however, has established arguably the most refined wrestling offence in the sport of MMA, dominating the likes of Thiago Alves, BJ Penn and Jon Fitch from top position. He has also submitted the legendary Matt Hughes, but Shields is convinced the champion will not get any joy come Saturday night.

"Nothing's impossible, but it's very, very unlikely," said the challenger. "I've never been submitted in a fight and I don't plan on ever being submitted in a fight.

"I'm just gonna go out there and give it all on the ground and I'm not gonna be worried about getting submitted. Of course I can make a mistake and get caught, but I don't plan on that happening. I'm gonna go after him on the ground."

Shields has been working with top-level wrestlers of the calibre of Chael Sonnen, Matt Lindland, and Phil Davis in the lead-up to the weekend's bout, and it is inevitable he will try to win the fight on the floor. The fear will be that St-Pierre controls the stand-up, as he did against Josh Koscheck last time out, but Shields sees a telling difference.

"Koscheck, once he got busted up a couple of times, kind of let GSP dictate the pace. That's what he likes to do, and that's why it's so effective. That's what I don't plan on letting him do."

Shields is oozing confidence ahead of Toronto's main event, but St-Pierre has confessed he is nervous going into the record-setting title battle. Click here for more.
