Kenny Florian has been told by UFC president Dana White that he is likely to be the next challenger to Jose Aldo's featherweight title, if the pair come through their next encounters.
Aldo, who at the age of 24 is fast becoming something of a phenomenon at 145lbs, is preparing to make his UFC debut at UFC 129 against the hard-hitting Mark Hominick. Victory is expected for the Brazilian, who last lost in 2005.
Florian has his own bout to prepare for, when he meets the highly rated Diego Nunes in his featherweight debut on June 11. The former lightweight No. 1 contender is hoping to finally get his hands on UFC gold at his new weight, and he asked White on ESPN's MMA Live for a title shot.
"Oh, here we go," White said. "This is usually what the reporters ask me, and now you're the reporter and the fighter.
"Everybody knows where you stand in the sport and obviously, if you can get in there - yes. You make that weight Kenny and, yeah, you're probably going to get the next title shot."
For now, all focus is on Aldo in Toronto, where he attempts to transfer his exceptional WEC form to the UFC. The Muay Thai dangerman destroyed Urijah Faber, Mike Brown and Manny Gamburyan in his last three bouts, and he has only lost once in 19 career fights.
