Kimi Raikkonen says he was taking one step forward and two steps back with his set-up in Abu Dhabi as he could only qualify ninth in his "tricky" Ferrari.

Raikkonen out-qualified Fernando Alonso for just the third time this year on Saturday but will line up seventh after Red Bull was excluded and moved to the back of the grid for an illegal front wing. Despite noticing an improvement from Saturday's practice session Raikkonen thinks there are a lot of issues to iron out for Sunday's race at Yas Marina.

"It was a bit better in qualifying than it was in the first practice [FP3 on Saturday]," Raikkonen said. "The rear is a bit loose in odd places and sometimes it's a bit tricky with the front end. I keep changing from corner to corner and it's a bit on edge all the time, so not ideal. Not exactly what you want but it is what it is and we know where the issues, I'm pretty sure next year we will have a stronger package overall to get rid of many issues.

"We are kind of stuck in the area that you fix certain things with the set-up but then create another problem. It's a bit like you fix one but then make another issue. We will see how we can do tomorrow, hopefully we can have a strong race."

Raikkonen, who won the 2012 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, has endured a frustrating return season to Ferrari but he wants to end 2014 on a high.

"It was a difficult year but we're trying to finish tomorrow as strong as we can and as I've said before I have 100% in the people working on next year."
