October 15, 1983: The drivers' championship went down to the wire and was won for the second time by Nelson Piquet after he finished third at the South African Grand Prix, while Alain Prost retired

September 25, 1983: Nelson Piquet moved to within two points of championship leader Alain Prost with victory at the European Grand Prix at Brands Hatch

September 11, 1983: An enthralling title race saw another twist as Nelson Piquet's victory at Monza brought him back into contention for the championship as rival Alain Prost retired with a turbo failure mid-race. He left Italy only five points behind Prost with Rene Arnoux in between them, two points off the lead

August 28, 1983: A Ferrari one-two at the Dutch Grand Prix was headed by Rene Arnoux who became a contender for the championship despite pledging to help team-mate Patrick Tambay earlier in the month

August 14, 1983: Alain Prost won in Austria, his fourth win of the season, despite only leading for six of the 53 laps. He did his overtaking when needed and was exactly placed over the final stages of the race. His closest challenger, Nelson Piquet, came third, but Prost finished the weekend with a cushion of 14 points in the drivers' championship

August 7, 1983: Rene Arnoux took victory in Germany after ignoring team orders, just as he had done a year earlier at the French Grand Prix, which had led to the irreparable breakdown in the relationship with his Renault team-mate Alain Prost

June 5, 1983: Michele Alboreto recorded his second grand prix win on the street circuit in Detroit on a weekend the turbocharged cars were found wanting with only four out of 12 finishing the race

May 22, 1983: After an absence of 13 years, the Belgian Grand Prix returned to Spa-Francorchamps and Alain Prost was the man who came away with a win for Renault and in so doing moved to the top of the drivers' championship

May 15, 1983: Keke Rosberg finally got his title defence underway with victory at the damp Monaco Grand Prix

May 1, 1983: Patrick Tambay in a Ferrari won the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, delighting the hugely partisan crown even though he beat Italian Riccardo Patrese to victory

April 17, 1983: A win and pole position at home was the result that Renault was after and it was French driver Alain Prost who obliged at Paul Ricard
