Khan not expecting to spar with Pacquiao

Amir Khan has revealed he does not expect to spar with Manny Pacquiao ahead of his light-welterweight rematch against Lamont Peterson.

Khan, like Pacquiao, is trained by Freddie Roach, and has worked closely with the welterweight Filipino ahead of their previous fights. However, the Bolton fighter insists this time things will be different - noting that the individual styles of Peterson and Pacquiao's next opponent, Timothy Bradley, mean the duo would gain little from working against one-another in the ring.

Khan is nevertheless preparing to fly out to Pacquiao's gym in the Philippines next month, where he will work closely with Roach on a gameplan to avenge his controversial defeat to Peterson at the end of last year.

The intention not to spar might hint that both fighters are preparing for a possible meeting in the ring at some point down the line - although Khan dispelled that theory by acknowledging he would go a few rounds with Pacquiao if asked to.

"We'll train together for the first part of April," Khan confirmed. "Manny's bought his own gym in Manilla, so they want us to train over there with him. I have to go and follow wherever Freddie goes.

"The main camp, I'll be running with Manny in the morning. But I don't think that we'll be sparring because we're facing different styles and opponents.

"But if he wants to spar, then we'll spar."

Khan was speaking at the weigh-in for Matthew Macklin's title fight against middleweight Sergio Martinez, which takes place on Saturday. Both fighters made the weight with ease, and Khan is hopeful his friend can cause an upset after enduring a narrow points defeat in his last bout.

"I've known Matthew Macklin for about five or six years, so for me to be here is an honour, and I'm going to be supporting him 100 per cent," Khan said. "He should already be the world the champion, because that fight in Germany [against Felix Sturm], that was his fight."
