Race

14:03 Our data says Massa's super-softs have five laps on them whereas the rest of the top ten have three laps on them. Those are the tyres they used in Q2 for their fastest lap, remember.

14:01 Hamilton makes a bit of a tardy get away on the formation lap, but will be allowed to move back up to second place on the run back round to the grid.

14:00 Hulkenberg, Maldonado, Chilton, Bianchi, Ericsson and Gutierrez will start on soft tyres compared to the rest on super-soft.

13:57 The heat is rising. 49C track temperature, so the drivers will have to look after their rear Pirellis coming out of some of the slow corners around here.

13:55 21 cars ready and waiting on the grid. Gutierrez's Sauber is starting from the pit lane after he wrote off a chassis in FP3 yesterday and failed to make qualifying.

13:54 No Bernie Ecclestone this weekend, but we do have the welcome news of a new 10-year deal for the Montreal circuit.

13:51 FIA president Jean Todt is on the grid. This is his fourth F1 race appearance in a row as he attempts to up his presence and influence in the sport at a time when there is plenty to debate.

13:51 Right now both will be keen to do their talking on the track. Hamilton is confident he is quicker here but Rosberg has pole position and, assuming he holds that lead in the first stint, the first choice on strategy too.

13:48 A photo from about 30 minutes ago: Rosberg not entirely happy with Hamilton's new-found chummy demeanour following the events of Monaco.

13:46 It will be interesting to see how Ferrari get on from seventh and tenth on the grid. This is a track that exposes their weaknesses but the team was hoping new upgrades will have gone some way to addressing the poor traction and top speed seen so far this year.

13:45 Latest from Pirelli is that it will be a two-stop because of the hot temperatures. The sun is out and track temperatures are north of 40C.

13:43 Vettel tells Sky Sports: "It will be as tight as in qualifying, but I think the Mercedes will have the upper hand a bit still".

13:41 The cars are currently heading to the grid. Some of them are already there, but not the two Mercedes.

13:38 Degradation is minimal even on the super-soft, but it will still be a brave for either of the Mercedes to buck the trend with an alternative strategy given the advantage they have.

13:37 Pirelli expects the following strategy will be the optimum: "Start on supersoft, change to soft on lap 13, soft again on lap 41 then run to the finish." But says the alternative is: "Start on supersoft, change to soft on lap 26, and run to the finish."

13:35 Williams will feel like a podium is possible today and I suspect will be disappointed if they don't achieve that. But this race is not all about top speed, fuel economy will also come into play and tyre management.

13:32 Vettel starts from third on the grid and realistically doesn't stand a chance of fighting the Mercedes because he is lacking straight-line speed. His priority will be keeping the two Williamses behind him, but chances are that will be tricky too, with Bottas and Massa qualifying within half a tenth of a second of Vettel and having better straight-line speed.

13:30 Welcome to ESPN's live coverage of the Canadian Grand Prix. We have 70 laps of racing to come and it promises to be one of the best of the season, with Rosberg ahead of Hamilton on the grid and a track that rarely fails to throw up a thriller.

Lap 1

Hamilton gets a better start but Rosberg has the inside line and blocks him out. Rosberg leads Vettel into Turn two with Hamilton third.

Both Marussias are out at Turn 4. Bianchi's car has been destroyed, Chilton has damage top the front.

It looked like Chilton lost the rear of his Marussia in Turn 3 and slammed into Bianchi, who then crashed heavily into the barrier. Both cars out and Maldonado had to take avoiding action across the grass.

Lap 2

Gutierrez pits early on. He would have followed those other cars through Turn 3 and may have got a puncture.

There's also fluid on the racing line at the exit of Turn 4 where the Bianchi smashed into the wall.

Vettel asks his team to check tyre pressures, wary of the debris on the track.

Lap 3

A replay of the start shows that Hamilton just got his nose ahead, but Rosberg held the inside line, as was his right, and that forced Hamilton wide. They did well not to have an accident.

The outcome is a Red Bull between the pair as Vettel finds himself in a good position. Bottas took some pressure from Massa in the opening corners but remains fourth. Vergne doing well and is up to seventh ahead of Alonso and Raikkonen.

Lap 4

There is concrete dust down where Bianchi's car had that leak. The clear up operation is still underway. News from the pits that Bianchi is fine after that shunt, which is good to hear.

Vettel tells his team to tell the marshals that there is still debris beyond the fluid spill. There is still work being done to put cement dust down. It should make a restart very interesting indeed.

Lap 5

It will be interesting to see how long it takes Hamilton to get past Vettel once we restart and how much Vettel defends. Hamilton should have the straight-line speed advantage and a quicker car overall, but Vettel needs to build as much as a buffer as he can to the Williams.

Meanwhile, Ricciardo will want to attack the Williamses from sixth place.

Lap 6

Another lap under the safety car. It's a big clean up job here. That Marussia was destroyed at both front and rear. Lots of carbon fibre to sweep away to stop punctures at the restart.

Hamilton asks his team to keep him updated on the state of Turn 4 as he wants to be able to attack if possible on the second lap after the restart. Clearly he will take a cautious approach the first time around.

Lap 7

The cement dust and fluid is right on the racing line on what is a tricky corner exit at the best of times.

Safety car in this lap...

Lap 8

Rosberg goes early and gets a clear lead from Vettel as Hamilton has two Williamses on his tail through Turn 1.

No changes in the order through the first chicane, but Grosjean gets a big snap of oversteer coming out of Turn 4. It's still slippery out there.

Lap 9

Perez moves up to 10th after passing Button in the final corner of that last lap.

Rosberg leads Vettel by 1.4s. Hamilton is closing on Vettel but doesn't have the use of DRS until the next lap.

Lap 10

Hamilton remains within 0.5s of Vettel at the start of this lap. With the DRS you get the feeling he will pass out of Turn 10 and into the final chicane. The Mercedes is capable of 207mph through the speedtrap where as the Red Bull can only hit roughly 201mph

Kvyat spins at Turn One.

Hamilton makes his move and passes Vettel with some ease into the chicane. Took the inside and had the faster car. Battle rejoins between Rosberg and Hamilton.

Lap 11

1.7s is the gap between Rosberg and Hamilton at the start of this lap. Bottas was 1.7s off Vettel and has Massa a second back in fifth place.

Lap 12

Rosberg opens up the gap to 2.1s even though Hamilton is now in clear air.

Bottas complains of graining on his rear tyres and Massa has Ricciardo just 0.4s off. This is about to get interesting for fifth.

Lap 13

Ricciardo is so much quicker in the corners but cannot match the Mercedes-powered Williams on the straight. So that rules out the usual overtaking point of the final chicane.

Lap 14

Ricciardo pits. Interesting strategy that should get a few cars in front rethinking their strategy.

Ricciardo rejoins in clear air so can now make use of his faster pace through the corners in the hope he will lap faster than the Williams and emerge in front when they finally make their stops.

Lap 15

Hamilton has the gap back down to 1.7s. He will want to monitor the gap at the moment before pushing later in the race when the strategies start to pan out.

Button also makes an early stop after moving backwards on the track so far in this race.

The two Williamses have resisted the urge to react to Ricciardo so far, although they were struggling with rear graining.

Lap 16

Vettel and Vergne pit too. Massa has pitted now and comes out behind Vergne. Not good for him.

Bottas did pit as well.

Lap 17

Alonso responds and pits too. Raikkonen is staying out for now. Alonso just comes out ahead of Vergne, which means Massa has lost another place on track. The pit stops really did not work out well for him. Bottas remains ahead of Ricciardo after those stops.

Lap 18

Now Massa is making progress again as he passes Kvyat, who hasn't pitted yet.

Raikkonen finally pits and he has also lost out as he comes out in front of Button but behind Massa, Vergne and Alonso.

Lap 19

Rosberg pits first ahead of Hamilton, as is his right from the lead of the race. Hamilton is pushing hard to try and make the difference up, but the second pit stop should be a disadvantage.

And Rosberg goes very sideways through Turn 4. He could have ended up in the wall there and that will hand a slight advantage to Hamilton...

Lap 20

Despite the slide, Rosberg retains his lead as Hamilton's stop was 0.5s slower in the Mercedes pit box.

Perez and Hulkenberg are running third and fourth but have yet to pit. However, we know the Force India is kind to its tyres, so they may attempt a one-stop strategy.

Lap 21

Vettel is close behind Hulkenberg. Force India have had a disappointing weekend, but they were focusing on race pace in practice and making the tyres last, even at the cost of qualifying pace.

As things shake out we can see just how much Massa lost out. He had a slow change on his front right and it has cost him six places as he now runs in 11th.

Lap 22

Vettel is looking for a way past Hulkenberg, but no need for the Force India to make it easy.

Hamilton is now closing in again and has the gap to Rosberg back down to 1.8s. Even though things seem to be going Rosberg's way, Hamilton still seems to be quicker.

A replay shows Raikkonen trying to pass Kvyat at the final chicane and the Toro Rosso overshooting the chicane as a result.

Lap 23

Hamilton now has the gap down to 1.3s to Rosberg. Things are heating up.

Maldonado returns to the pits with loose bodywork and a sick sounding Lotus.

Vettel attempts a move at the Turn 10 chicane on Hulkenberg but goes too deep and loses the place again on the exit.

Lap 24

Hamilton is now within a second of Rosberg. He is wiithin DRS range and is about to go on the attack as he locks up into the Turn 10 hairpin.

Lap 25

The gap is now just 0.5s between the two Mercedes. We have a proper battle on our hands here.

Kobayashi retires at Turn 4. He had a wonky left rear tyre on his Caterham after a half spin at Turn 1. A forgettable weekend for him.

Lap 26

Rosberg locks up into the final chicane on the last lap. He cuts the chicane and extends his lead over Hamilton. Hamilton is definitely quicker and Rosberg is visibly struggling.

Massa passes Alonso into Turn 1 for eighth as he starts his recovery. Looked easy with the extra power of the Mercedes engine.

Lap 27

Rosberg keeps the gap at 1 second for now. Hamilton is still pushing hard, but will feel hard done by as Rosberg gained about 0.6s by cutting the final chicane.

The stewards will investigate Rosberg skipping the chicane for exceeding the track limits.

Lap 28

Vettel, meanwhile, still can't find a way past Hulkenberg. Perez is 3.0s clear of Hulkenberg so both Force Indias are looking comfortable on their one-stop strategy.

Hamilton is told Rosberg is under investigation and not to take any risks. However, Hamilton is now within 0.5s of his team-mate.

Lap 29

There is a judge down at the final chicane to see if anybody gets an advantage by cutting it. Rosberg set a fastest lap, so clearly did, but it's whether it is enough to warrant a penalty.

Lap 30

Hamilton is on Rosberg's gearbox regardless. Hopefully we'll still see them go wheel-to-wheel even if Rosberg is due a penalty.

Bottas has now joined Vettel in stacking up behind Hulkenberg. Perez is told they he will extend this first stint ahead of that gaggle of cars behind him.

Lap 31

Rosberg eases a slight hap over Hamilton on this latest lap with a 0.7s advantage across the line. Hamilton is quicker, but currently has the DRS advantage. It would be interesting to see if he can break that second gap if he gets past Rosberg.

Bottas locks up behind Vettel. The Red Bull isn't quick enough to pass on the straights, but the Williams might be.

Lap 32

Rosberg is told to save fuel, which won't be good news for him with Hamilton breathing down his neck. Rosberg has used 44kg of fuel to Hamilton's 42kg.

And Hamilton gets close in the final chicane as a result.

Lap 33

No penalty for Rosberg but he is now on his final warning for cutting the chicane. The good news is we have a brilliant battle that we are not going to lose, but there was no doubt Rosberg gained some advantage by cutting the chicane and flooring it as he did.

Lap 34

Hamilton is 0.7s off Rosberg. He's pushing hard in the knowledge he has fuel in his pocket, although his tyres will be taking a battering behind him.

Lap 35

Hamilton appears to have eased off now and is 1.1s behind Rosberg.

Perez pits from third and takes on soft tyres for super-softs. That will be his final stop as he comes out behind Vergne in 10th.

Hulkenberg remains out on track and has softs as he opted to start on the harder compound. He may as well stay out longer despite a queue of Vettel, Bottas and Ricciardo behind him.

Lap 36

Hamilton now drops to 1.2s off Rosberg, so it may be that Hamilton is regrouping ahead of the next round of pit stops.

Bottas pits to kick off the second set of stops, but that hasn't worked well as he comes out behind Button in 12th. He needs to start lapping quicker than the group behind Hulkenberg to make this work and he locks up big time into the hairpin.

Lap 37

Hamilton says he has lost power "I've got no power guys". "We're looking into it" comes the response.

Hamilton is now 1.8s behind Rosberg and still running, so if he has lost power it's not terminal at the moment.

Rosberg is reporting the same problems and is told "We believe your team-mate has the same problem".

Lap 38

Ricciardo pits and comes out ahead of Vettel, those pit stops worked for Ricciardo but both Red Bulls are now ahead of Bottas.

Lap 39

Hamilton and Rosberg are going about two seconds slower than the rest of the field. They are incredibly close on track but the cars are clearly down on power. Well, this is getting very interesting, Hulkenberg is 23.5s behind at the moment but is going two seconds a lap quicker.

Lap 40

Hamilton now has the gap down to 0.5s as they both appear to be pushing through the corners even if they are down on power on the straights.

Vettel, meanwhile, is told to look after his tyres, although he will not be happy to be behind Ricciardo following the last stops.

Lap 41

The Red Bulls really need to get past Hulkenberg to have a crack at the Mercedes. They are clearly quicker, but it's the same issue of being too slow on the straights.

Raikkonen spins after pitting at the Turn 10 hairpin. He was all on his own, very similar to a spin he had in Friday practice.

Lap 42

Hulkenberg now pits. That will be his only stop and he comes out behind the two Red Bulls stuck behind Perez.

Lap 43

Massa and Alonso are in third and fourth but still need to pit again.

Lap 44

Rosberg and Hamilton continue to lap off the pace with the loss of power they are experiencing.. Now Massa is told to try and run a one-stop. Williams has its sights on beating Mercedes.

Rosberg is told that both cars have the same problem and he needs to pick up the pace as they are worried about the rest catching up.

Lap 45

Rosberg pits. New soft tyres go on the car with a relatively slow stop at 4.5s. He comes out behind Massa.

Alonso also pits, he's not gambling on a one-stop.

Massa stands a real chance of winning this race if he can make his tyres last.

Lap 46

Hamilton pits now. It looked like a quicker stop. It was a quicker stop as Hamilton comes out ahead of Rosberg and behind Massa.

Thrilling stuff as Massa attempts to nurse his tyres to the end and Hamilton and Rosberg attempt to nurse their cars to the end.

Hamilton went deep into the hairpin though, lost a place to Rosberg and attempted to get it back at the chicane and ran wide.

Lap 47

Smoke is coming out the back of Hamilton. His rear brakes have failed. His rear brakes have failed which suggests a MGU-K failure that has put too much stress on the smaller rear brakes the cars run this year. Game over by the looks of it.

Lap 48

Hamilton returns to the pits. The car goes up on the jacks and back into the garage. Rosberg is also having problems as he runs wide too. Rosberg told to look after the brakes and attempt to finish.

Massa now pits in the knowledge a one-stop would be pushing it too far. He comes out behind Bottas in seventh.

Lap 49

Rosberg leads the race again. Perez is only 2.6s behind though.

Kvyat retires in the Toro Rosso at the hairpin.

Lap 50

Rosberg is about a second slower than Perez as the Force India tries to keep the Red Bulls behind at bay.

This has developed into a thrilling race. Ricciardo is on Perez's gearbox but does not have the straight-line speed needed to pass the Force India. However, he does have fresher tyres and more downforce through the corners.

Lap 51

Ricciardo can sniff a first victory here, but has Perez feeling exactly the same way in front. Four-time champion Vettel watches on from fourth.

Lap 52

Perez is now 0.6s off Rosberg and about 0.3s a lap slower. Ricciardo is closing through the twisty bits but can't get anywhere near the Force India on the straights nor in the final chicane.

Rosberg is trying to protect his rear brakes by cranking the brake bias forwards.

Lap 53

Vettel is told to ease off and save his tyres for the last ten laps when his side of the Red Bull garage is hoping Ricciardo will have ruined his tyres trying to pass Perez.

But the way this is panning out Rosberg looks quick enough to hold off Perez, who is on much older tyres.

Lap 54

Perez is 0.6s off Rosberg. Ricciardo is asked where the best place to pass Perez is so that Red Bull can give him as much power before that point as possible.

Lap 55

Ricciardo likes the look of a run into Turn 1, but even with full power from his Renault power unit he is not close enough to attempt a pass.

Rosberg, meanwhile, has just set the fastest first sector of the race. He's told he's doing a really good job by the pit wall.

Lap 56

Perez remains 0.7s off Rosberg, but didn't use the DRS on that last lap, presumably because he can't keep up ahead of the detection zone.

Massa wants to be let loose from behind Bottas on 12 lap fresher tyres as they both end up behind Hulkenberg. Alonso has also joined that battle.

Lap 57

Perez is now a second off Rosberg.

Bottas attemptes a move on Hulkenberg but runs too deep. Massa takes advantage to get past his team-mate and beats Hulkenberg into the final chicane.

Lap 58

Great news for Massa who is now able to attack Vettel, Ricciardo and Perez five seconds down the road.

Massa sets a new fastest middle sector and has fresher tyres than all the cars ahead of him.

Lap 59

Perez is back within a second of Rosberg with the gap at 0.7s. Ricciardo remains 0.5s off the Force India with Vettel 0.4s behind.

Vettel pushing hard now after saving those tyres over the last ten laps. And they both run deep into the Turn 10 hairpin.

Lap 60

0.4s is now the gap between Perez and Rosberg as the battle behind him heats up and he can concentrate on the limping Mercedes.

Bottas has problems with a vibration on his right front after that earlier lock up and now he has lost a place to Alonso too. Alonso up to seventh.

Lap 61

Perez again didn't use DRS but is getting so close without it. He needs to nail his lap just before the detection zone to be able to catch up with Rosberg. However, his tyres will now be feeling the strain.

Massa has now caught up with the two Red Bulls.

Grosjean is out with rear wing damage.

Lap 62

Perez has now fallen back towards the Red Bulls, while Rosberg somehow still leads this race.

Massa doesn't get a great run out of Turn 10, but should have DRS behind Vettel now.

Lap 63

1.6s separate Rosberg and Massa at the moment across the top five. Massa is the fastest of the lot and needs to push to pass the two Red Bulls over these next two laps.

Massa slow again out of Turn 10 after over egging it into the corner. That cost him dearly at the end of the straight.

Lap 64

Rosberg remains 0.5s clear of Perez. Ricciardo is 0.7s off the Force India and seemingly unable to attack the Force India. Vettel is right on his tail though.

Now Massa has a chance but had to got the outside into the chicane and couldn't quite make the pass stick.

Lap 65

Ricciardo told to cool his car when he can behind Perez, it's all getting a bit much for his Red Bull.

Massa attacks again, but can't make it stick.

Lap 66

Ricciardo lunges around the outside into Turn 1 ... and makes it stick! Just fringes around the grass. Perez can't fight back and it looked like Vettel nudged him from behind.

Massa can't take advantage, but Ricciardo now has a chance to attack Rosberg.

Lap 67

Rosberg's lead is 1.2s now. Perez is 1.5s behind. Vettel is 0.3s off the back of the Force India.

Perez says he has also lost rear brakes. This is one of the hardest races on brakes on the calendar and the new skinny rear brakes are really struggling.

Lap 68

Ricciardo is now 0.7s off Rosberg and he is closing with 3 laps remaining. Perez has now setteld for trying to hold onto a podium ahead of Vettel. Great race by the Force India driver so far, it has to be said.

Massa is still bottled up behind Vettel his chance has gone.

Lap 69

Ricciardo takes the lead at the final chicane! Rosberg could not defend as the Red Bull used DRS to cruise by.

It was so easy at the end with two laps remaining, but Perez is still holding up Vettel and protecting Rosberg's second place.

But now Vettel tries a move and makes it stick on Perez as he moves up to third.

Lap 70

Ricciardo takes the first win of his career and Red Bull's first of the season.

Meanwhile the clean up operation continues at Turn 1. A replay shows Massa hit the back of Perez under braking. Perez may have moved slightly to the left in the braking zone but we knew he was struggling on the brakes.

Meanwhile, Button moved up to fourth at the end of that race ahead of Hulkenberg and Alonso. Bottas had to settle for seventh in another hugely disappointing race for Williams.

Vettel was actually quite lucky not to get caught up in the Turn 1 accident at the end. But he takes third place, to round off Red Bull's best weekend of the season by far.

-------------------------------

Huge accident as Massa hits Perez in the first corner. Horrible, horrible accident as Massa tried to pass on the way down to Turn 1.

Both drivers are moving as the medical car arrives on the scene.

We are technically under safety car conditions and Ricciardo crosses the line for victory.

Vettel congratulates Ricciardo in parc ferme. Great to see as it was a race he probably felt he should have won after the way the pit stops worked out.

Rosberg will be happy to come away from Canada in second. Impressive work by him to see the chequered flag after a suspected MGU-K failure and rear brake issues.

Ricciardo can't quite believe it and it won't surprise you to hear he has a huge smile on his face.
