Qualifying

Welcome back to Malaysia for qualifying. Rain is beginning to fall at the circuit but were not talking a thunderstorm ... yet.

Wbber led the final practice session, marginally ahead of Hamilton. It could be very close and expect teh Ferrari of Fernando Alonso to be in the mix too.

It's bound to be a very busy session but if you send your questions here I will do my best to answer them. Thoughts and opinions are also welcome.

If we do have very heavy rain and the session has to be stopped the teams will take the times from the latest session, be it Q1, Q2 or Q3, to male up the grid. It could be a real lottery.

Looking at the TV feed we are now experiencing heavy rain. Hopefully qualifying will run its course and we'll have all three sessions completed in full and a proper grid.

The race will start at the same time tomorrow so we could see the same again in 24 hours time.

Charlie Whiting has said there is a three hour window for quali to be completed today and all we need is one of the three sessions to be completed to form a grid.

Williams radio reports this is the worst weather we will get this session and it should clear up after Q1. A drying track would make for a fascinating Q2 and Q3.

Lotus is keen to get out there: "Raining hard, going straight out on inters."

A big queue at the end of the pit lane as Kobayashi leads a train of inter-shod F1 cars onto the track.

Big clouds of spray as the drivers experiment to find grip off the rubbered-in racing line.

The Sauber of Kobayashi is moving around underneath him.

FP3 pace-setter Webber is sitting it out in the garage for now.

Buemi is the first to start a hot lap. It's quite dry through turns 10, 11, 12, 13 in the second half of the lap.

Petrov spins in turn two. Buemi sets a time of 1:48.945.

Vettel is the only front runner to venture out. It is bone dry in the second half of the track so the inter tyres will get very hot in that section. As they enter the final corner they hit a wall of spray again. Remarkable conditions.

Buemi off the track in the wet section of the circuit at the final corner.

Vettel only eighth in the Red Bull about 3 seconds off pace-setter de la Rosa. Rain-master Schumacher heads out on to the circuit.

Webber heads out he's on inters too. Half of the track is still way too wet to try anything else.

Kubica now the fastes on a 1:46.283. Liuzzi off the track but just keeps it out the gravel. If the rain continues some drivers could find themsleves struggling on some sections on the inters.

Senna off the track and stops in the gravel - his session is over.

The track is definitely past its best in this session, it could get interesting for some of the big drivers who decided to stay in the pits early on.

The track is definitely past its best in this session, it could get interesting for some of the big drivers who decided to stay in the pits early on.

Hamilton spins in torrential rain at the final corner.

Button in the gravel and out of the session. He's 13th fastest but won't be able to take part in Q2.

Hamilton, Alonso, Massa in the drop zone as rain continues to fall. Button said he aquaplaned off, full wet tyres are now necessary.

Vettel is safe in third. Laps on the full wet tyres won't be quick but might just be able to get the good cars out of the bottom seven.

Hamilton still lapping on inters but is about to bolt on full wets

Schumacher warned to careful on his full wet tyres. Slides the car into turn two. He is just in Q2 in 14th.

It is very wet in the high speed turns 5 and 6. That's where Button went off.

What an exciting race we would have if the grid stays as it is. Schumacher doesn't improve on his wet tyres.

Alonso up to 20th but still not enough for Q2.

Hamilton is not fast enough in sector 1 but the track is better further round. Alonso spins he will start 20th or lower umless he can get one more lap in...

Hamilton 21st 1.271 shy of Q2. He has one more chance. Alonso will also get another go.

The rain has stopped as Massa spins off. He is only 19th. Alonso ever so careful on the throttle, Hamilton has a personal best in sector 2.

Hamilton misses Q2 up to 20th, Alonso beats him but isn't in Q2 either, nor is Massa. What a prospect for tomorrow Alonso 19th, Hamilton 20th and Massa 21st. The gamble didn't pay off. They will join Trulli, Chandhok, Senna and di Grassi in the bottom seven places on the grid.

Button will start 17th as his car got beached in the gravel - massive driver error but not helped by his team's decision to send him out late. He says: "We read it wrong. We though the first rainstorm was it but it was the wrong thing to do. There was no warning, my first lap was fine but the second I aquaplaned off. I hope I haven't damaged the car, the engine was left on for a while in the gravel as we were hoping for a push."

So, Vettel, Webber, Schumacher and Rosberg are sitting pretty.

All the cars come out at the start of this session, most of them on full wet tyres.

More rain is expected and there are dark clouds overhead. Schumacher has decided to go out on intermediates, Rosberg on full wets.

Schumacher warned to get the job done as more rain is on the way. Petrov on inters looks ok and in control, he's not pushing hard though.

Schumacher sets the fastest first sector... and in the middle sector, he's faster than Vettel on the wets... Schumacher fastest by a second over Vettel.

Schumacher's experience pays dividends it'll be hard to beat that if more rain comes.

Glock spins his Virgin. Kubica and Hulkenberg are fast behind Schumacher as Petrov gets his head around the inters' grip and goes second.

In the drop zone is Sutil, Barrichello, Liuzzi, Kovalainen, Buemi and Glock.

Vettel takes on inters as Schumacher improves on his.

Petrov goes fastest by 1.9 seconds, great lap on the inters. Schumacher pips him though as the inters hit their zone.

Vettel starts a fast lap and is hoping to secure his place after doing the fastest final sector on his out lap.

Hulkenberg looking very fast in the Williams, Kubica also fast. The goal posts are shifting throughout this session.

Yellow falg somewhere as the two Williams go fast and Vettel goes fastest of all. 1:47.003 for Vettel as lightning strikes over the hills surrounding the circuit.

Kubica now fastest, dropping Webber to ninth.

Sutil quick in third place after Vettel retakes the top spot.

Webber reacting as Kobayashi drops him to tenth. Heavy rain in the pits now.

Webber 12th now but sets the fastest first sector...

Schumacher also quick

Webber up to 7th and drops Schumacher to 10th.

Schumacher holds tenth but should just stay in. He goes through.

So, Petrov, de la Rosa, Buemi, Alguersuari, Kovalainen and Glock go out. Button didn't take part in Q2 after spinning off in Q1.

Jourdan Fernandez asks: "The teams who make it into Q3 can't change their set-up for tomorrow's race right? So they have to keep their front wing angles, tires, ride height, etc. for tomorrow's race even if the race starts hot & dry?"

All drivers can't change their set-ups under Parc Ferme conditions unless they are willing to start from the pits. So they will all start with what they've got.

"We were unlucky with yellow flags, we couldn't nail it and then it started to rain more. I'm just going to race my heart out tomorrow," says Lewis Hamilton after dropping out in Q3.

Virgin happy: "P16 at the end of Q2. We think Heikki had a fresher set of inters at the end. It'll be an interesting race!"

Heavy rain again at the start of Q3 meaning all drivers come back on the track with full wets.

Lots of spray and it looks as though the rain is going to stay until the end of the session.

Kubica skipped the queue in the pit lane to get out in front of his competitors. Cheeky but technically legal.

Kubica starts his first lap and is sliding everywhere. RED FLAG

Not sure why there has been a red flag yet.... All the cars were coping with the rain so it would be surprising if it was due to a wet track.

The clock stopped with 7:17 remaining in this session. It was due to the water as the cars are now filtering back to the pits in one piece.

The rain is pelting down now. The session could resume before 7.00pm if it eases off.

So Vettel was quickest in Q2 from Sutil and that could form the grid. Technically we have two hours to sit it out for a respite in the rain but if it gets too dark that will all change

Vettel labels the conditions "ridiculous" over the team radio.

My mistake on the order in Q2. Here is how the grid will line up if the rain doesn't ease off.

Sebastian Vettel, Robert Kubica, Adrian Sutil, Nico Hulkenberg, Nico Rosberg, Kamui Kobayashi, Mark Webber, Tonio Liuzzi, Rubens Barrichello, Michael Schumacher.

The rain is now easing off so that might not come into play.

Sutil told he has the chance to do well in this session.

Most drivers are staying in their cars and having a drink to pass the time.

Umbrellas are coming down on the hillsides so maybe we will get a five-minute warning for a session restart soon.

Massa: "Definitely not the right strategy. The whole team made the mistake together. We planned to go out late but the rain started again. It will definitely be a difficult race but we will try to achieve the best and score points."

Alonso says: "For sure today we have been unlucky so tomorrow we hope to avoid more mistakes."

Liuzzi lines up at the end of the pit lane to get the session restarted on wet tyres. The rain has stopped but the track will still be very wet.

Sutil parks his Force India alongside his team-mate. They look as if they will have a drag race out the pits. Still just under two minutes until the start so their wet tyres will be losing temp. Their engines will also be rising in temp.

Liuzzi told he has priority into turn one. Force India were keen to stop another cheeky pass in the pit lane by Kubica.

So the Force Indias head out on to the circuit. Webber has chosen inters in what is quite a risky decision.

Full wets for Rosberg and Vettel. Schumacher also on full wet tyres.

Liuzzi and Sutil start their qualifying laps. Webber staying out on wets despite his team preparing inters in the pits

Sutil and Kubica look quick.

3:24 remaining in this session as the Force Indias set their laps, Sutil fastest.

Vettel goes sixth, off the pace in the wet. Rosberg starts a quick lap with a good first sector as rain returns.

Webber now going fast as the inters come into their prime in sector two.

Sutil holds pole ahead of Hulkenberg.

Webber provisional pole on the inters by 0.5s, Rosberg up to second

Vettel up to third as Webber finds more time on the intermediate tyres.

Chequered flag is out as Webber goes 0.8 faster than his last lap.

Webber a second faster than his last lap and that locks out the pole, great lap.

So, Webber pole, Rosberg second, Vettel third. Then Sutil, Hulkenberg, Kubica, Barrichello, Schumacher, Kobayashi, Liuzzi.

Webber congratulates his team over the radio.

Thank you for joining us for a thrilling qualifying session. Make sure you check back tomorrow for what promises to be a sensational race.
