Race

14:01: Just Magnussen and Wehrlein opting to start on super-softs, the rest go for ultra-softs.

14:01: Kvyat gets a push start after stalling his car on the grid. He was meant to start 11th, but will now have to start at the back.

14:00: The tyre blankets come off and the cars leave the grid for the warm-up lap.

13:58: Fuel consumption is likely to be Alonso's undoing. He said he's aiming for a top ten, but that Honda engine has the worst fuel economy on the grid, especially if they are dealing with strong head winds around the circuit.

13:55: We're hoping the hot conditions don't result in the kind of cooling issues we saw in Russia. We'll get a good measure of that early on when we see the gaps at the front. The other thing to keep an eye on is fuel consumption.

13:52: There's always a high chance of a safety car here and it's even higher with the strength of the winds we have today. Keep an eye out for mistakes further down the field.

13:49: The drivers return to their cars and the grid is cleared of all but the essential team members to get this race underway.

13:47: Followed by the Canadian national anthem.

13:46: The drivers respect a minute's silence for the victims of the recent terror attacks in London.

13:45: I've finally got my timing screen up and running. Air temperature is 28C and track is at 41C. That's fairly high for Canada, but if the sun comes out fully from behind the clouds it will get even warmer, bringing the soft tyres into play.

13:43: Hamilton's car has arrived on the grid. The Mercedes drivers no longer stay in the car for the ride up to the front of the grid. Instead they get out as they arrive at the back of the grid, go and relieve themselves and let the mechanics wheel the car to the front. It makes sense, but there are still plenty of drivers who remain in their car. Ricciardo is always keen to whip his helmet off but remain in the car.

13:41: During the long runs on Friday there was very little to choose between Ferrari and Mercedes. However, Vettel and Bottas both spun during their long runs, which would obviously be devastating for a race strategy today.

13:37: Pirelli's fastest predicted strategy was to switch from ultra-soft to soft on lap 22, but I suspect we might see a few variations on that as drivers attempt "the overcut" as Vettel managed on Raikkonen in Monaco.

13:33: It's very windy out there, much more so than on previous days, and the super-hot track temperatures that were forecast haven't emerged. That will make an interesting choice for the strategists between super-soft and soft at the single pit stop most drivers are expected to make. The super-soft is a low working range tyre, the soft is a high working range tyre.

13:30: Hello and welcome to ESPN's live coverage of the Canadian Grand Prix. The race is only 30 minutes away and the pit lane is now open.

Lap 1

Hamilton holds the lead off the start but Max Verstappen makes a great getaway from fifth to take second.

Sainz and Massa have come together in Turn 1. Safety car deployed.

Apologies, that's Turn 3. Sainz made contact with one of the Haas further back and then came into Turn 3 backwards and took out Massa.

Lap 2

Grosjean comes into the pits for a new front wing, suggesting he was the Haas involved.

Vandoorne is up to 11th ahead of Alonso who remains 12th.

But bad news for Ferrari with Vettel fourth and Raikkonen sixth.

Lap 3

I'm looking forward to the replay of Verstappen's start. That was incredible from fifth to second on the short run down to Turn 1 and then he hung it around the outside and took the apex at Turn 2.

Alonso says "they need to calm down" after being in the midst of that Sainz/Massa collision. But it was further back where the incident was triggered.

Lap 4

We're racing again.

Hamilton leads the pack across the line after Verstappen attacks into the final chicane.

Bottas attempted to take advantage and pass Verstappen into Turn 1 but it's as they were at the front.

Raikkonen has lost another place and is now behind Perez.

Lap 5

Vettel has lost a huge chunk of his front wing and the team considered a pit stop. But instead he stays out in fourth ahead of Ricciardo.

Raikkonen lost a place to Perez after getting on the grass and sliding left and right across the track.

Vettel pits for a new front wing...

Lap 6

Vettel spends 11.1s stationary in the pit stop after Ferrari called him in saying it was "too dangerous" for his to stay out. He rejoins in 18th place - dead last.

Lap 7

Hamilton extends his lead to 2.025s over Verstappen.

Lap 8

A replay shows Vettel had front wing damage on lap one after the run down to Turn 1.

A replay shows Sainz cut across Grosjean in the big accident on lap one. I would say that's the Toro Rosso drivers fault and he paid the price. Unfortunately he took Massa out too.

Lap 9

Hamilton leads by 3.109s. This could become a walk in the park for him.

Vettel reports that he has lost a piece of front wing from his new one too!. He's now joined the rear of the field so maybe more contact.

Lap 10

It was contact between Verstappen and Vettel that caused the damage to Ferrari's wing on lap one. I wouldn't attribute blame either way though, it was great and very close racing.

Hamilton is now 4.0s ahead of Verstappen. Bottas is 1.7s off Verstappen and 4.0s ahead of Ricciardo.

Lap 11

Verstappen is out of the race! It looks like a mechanical failure.

He looks furious and I'm not surprised. What a shame after such a great start to the race.

VSC deployed to clear the Red Bull from the short straight between T2 and T3.

Lap 12

Hulkenberg pits under the VSC.

Hamilton's lead over Bottas in second is neutralised at 9.4s.

Palmer and Ericsson also pit.

Perez up to fourth now. He comes on the radio to complain about the aero balance in the wind.

Lap 13

There's a hat on the track! Magnussen reports it's a Ferrari cap. It's sat under the bridge on the entry to Turn 8.

Meanwhile, Verstappen's car is still being removed. So there should be time to clear the cap too. To be fair, if it ended up in a radiator it could be race over for the car involved.

Lap 14

Verstappen's Red Bull has been cleared, the cap remains. Racing is back underway.

Vandoorne loses a place at the restart to Magnussen and Stroll moves up to tenth past Vandoorne too at the hairpin!

Lap 15

Vandoorne loses yet another place to Hulkenberg.

Hamilton now has a lead of 6.1s over Bottas.

Ricciardo is 5.3s off Bottas.

Kvyat has a drive-through for retaking his position following his stalled getaway at the formation lap.

Lap 16

Kvyat not happy to hear the news of his penalty: "Ah, for f---'s sake"

Lap 17

Hamilton leads his teammate by 6.3s, so Mercedes has everything under control at the front. Vettel is now back up to 13th.

Hulkenberg attacks Stroll and Magnussen on the run down to Turn 1, but Stroll just keeps him at bay and holds on to ninth place.

Lap 18

Raikkonen pits after a series of off the pace laps. He takes on super-softs with 52 laps remaining.

Magnussen is under investigation for overtaking under the VSC.

Lap 19

Ricciardo pits from third. That will be covering off a potentially quick Raikkonen on the new super-softs.

Ricciardo comes out sixth but ahead of Raikkonen. Ricciardo opted for softs instead of super-softs though so should easily make the end.

There's a good chance Raikkonen will also make the end, but no-one has taken the tyres that far yet this weekend.

Lap 20

Vettel is now attacking Stroll for ninth.

Perez pits for super-softs and just comes out behind Ricciardo. So nearly gained a position there in the pit stops.

Lap 21

Vettel passes Stroll under braking for the final chicane and moves up to ninth. Alonso is in the mix with Ricciardo, Perez and Raikkonen, but only because he hasn't pitted yet. He's losing positions fast but on target for points still.

Lap 22

Hamilton keeps a comfortable 6.2s lead over Bottas at the front.

Ocon is 19.6s off Hamilton and has also not pitted yet.

Lap 23

Vettel passes Magnussen for eighth. Alonso is next ...

Bottas pits at the end of this lap.

Lap 24

Bottas takes on softs in 2.2s. No reason to risk the super-softs I suppose.

Bottas comes out well ahead of Ricciardo who is now fending off Perez who is on a softer compound.

Lap 25

Hamilton sets a new fastest lap and extends his lead to 21.2s.

Perez is still attacking. If it's going to happen then I reckon it will be in Turn 1. Two DRS zones plus Mercedes v Renault power makes it the obvious spot. But Ricciardo is holding him off so far.

Lap 26

Hulkenberg is back behind Stroll, but can't find a place to make a move stick. He takes to the escape road at eight and nine, but then attacks again at the hairpin. And now Hulkenberg is past the Williams on the following straight.

Stroll pits.

Five second penalty for Magnussen for overtaking under the VSC.

Lap 27

Hamilton now has a lead of 23.7s over Ocon - both have yet to pit. Bottas is now coming up behind the Force India in net second.

Alonso tells his team they are giving him all the wrong information. He's currently running seventh with Vettel on his tail.

Lap 28

Vettel is now past Alonso and up to seventh. That could become a net sixth depending on how Ocon's strategy works out. Raikkonen is the next driver on the road ahead of Vettel - they are both on the same strategy.

Lap 29

Hulkenberg passes Magnussen for ninth place.

Lap 30

Bottas is on Ocon's tail and trying to find a way past.

Meanwhile, Magnussen is trying to stop the rot as Kvyat attacks into the final chicane. The Haas driver holds him off but the Toro Rosso comes back and take the position with a brave move into T1.

Lap 31

Bottas remains stick behind Ocon. Bottas has a 11.4s lead over Ricciardo, so this is not crucial that he gets past.

Lap 32

Bottas tries another move into Turn 1 but hasn't got the braking advantage to get the move done. Odd that Force India are keeping Ocon out as he is losing time in this battle.

Hamilton pits at the end of this lap.

Lap 33

Hamilton takes on super-softs in 2.5s and comes out on a clear piece of race track, well ahead of Bottas.

Ocon also pits for super-softs and he comes out behind Raikkonen and ahead of Vettel. So the Force India is sixth but has fresh tyres compared to the Ferraris until the end of the race.

Lap 34

Hamilton's lead has extended to 9.3s with those pit stops. Ricciardo is 12.6s off Bottas, so no major battles at the front brewing.

Alonso says: "It's embarrassing power with this mode". He's eighth and has a 5,2s gap over Hulkenberg but has yet to pit.

Lap 35

Ocon is closing on Raikkonen and keeping Vettel at bay at the moment.

Hamilton extends his lead to 10.0s.

Lap 36

Ocon is really closing on Raikkonen now. Fresher tyres and Mercedes power on the Force India could be the difference.

Lap 37

The Raikkonen/Ocon battle is the most exciting battle on track right now. Vettel remains 2.3s off but has to be careful with his rear tyres as he is ideally going to the end.

Alonso could be on for points even once he's pitted. Remember Magnussen has to take a penalty at his stop and Vandoorne hasn't pitted yet either.

Lap 38

Ocon has a little look at Raikkonen but can't make it work into the final chicane. It will probably take Raikkonen's tyres to drop off a bit more for him to have a go.

Lap 39

Meanwhile, Stroll takes 14th from Palmer. He got shuffled down in the pit stops and I'm not entirely sure why. Worth investugating after the race.

Lap 40

Hamilton has a 11.9s lead over Bottas and is told Vettel (down in seventh) is on a one-stop despite pitting so early with that wing damage.

The stewards got the penalty for Kvyat wrong apparently and has another 10 seconds added to his time at the end of the race.

Lap 41

Vettel says he is pushing as hard as he can with the tyres he's got. He's 1.5s off Ocon at the moment.

Lap 42

Raikkonen pits... That's unusual. He's going for ultra-softs now. Very odd choice with Ocon right behind him.

Lap 43

Stroll is up to 13th now as Grosjean, who stopped on lap one, is losing grip.

Alonso pits from eighth. He takes on super-softs that should go until the end.

Lap 44

Vettel is now up to sixth after being shuffled ahead of Raikkonen at that last pit stop. He asks if the other teams have to pit and is told they don't.

Raikkonen is flying on the ultra-soft tyres.

Lap 45

Stroll now attacking Vandoorne for 12th. Vandoorne has yet to pit and he is told to hold up the Williams to help Alonso.

Stroll gets the move done at the end of the lap and takes 12th, so is now behind Alonso.

Lap 46

Vettel is told he is staying out, so Raikkonen lost a place with that stop and is now 14.6s off his teammate. Yes, he's on the faster tyres, but I doubt Vettel will jump out the way. Another pit stop shuffle?

Lap 47

Vettel is just 0.5s off Ocon now despite his older tyres. If he can get past the Force India that's another driver between him and the fast-chasing Raikkonen.

Stroll overtakes Alonso into the final chicane to take 11th. Good, clean move.

Lap 48

Hamilton asks about Vettel's progress and is informed the Ferrari is up to sixth. The progress of the Ferrari seems to be the race leader's only concern at the moment.

It's getting interesting between Ricciardo, Perez, Ocon and Vettel.

Lap 49

Ricciardo is told his strategy of taking on the softs will work out in the end. He keeps Perez at bay for another lap.

Ocon is 0.8s off his teammate and has Vettel 0.7s behind him. We may not have a battle for the lead, but we have a big battle for third.

Lap 50

Vettel pits. That's in line with Raikkonen and understandable considering he has been out there on those tyres since lap five. He takes on ultra-softs and comes out behind Raikkonen.

20 laps left and interesting to see Ferrari flip flopping on their strategy. They are trying everything to get back in this.

Lap 51

Ferrari is hoping the tyre advantage Vettel has will allow him eight laps to get past the Force Indias and try to attack Ricciardo. Kimi is on the same strategy of course but further down the road.

Lap 52

Perez is told Ocon is on fresher tyres and fancies his chances of passing Ricciardo. We might see a teammate shuffle here, but Perez won't like it.

Lap 53

Vettel sets a fastest lap and is now closing in on the 5.8s gap to Raikkonen. Raikkonen is 10.2s off Ocon but gaining very fast. This will get very exciting at the end.

Lap 54

No movement for third place at the moment. Ricciardo now has a comfortable margin over Perez again and it's Ocon who is looking racey. But it doesn't look like he'll get past.

Lap 55

Kvyat pits, serves his ten second penalty and then the team can't get the rear right off and that looks like the end of his race. Alonso back into the points as a result.

Lap 56

Perez says it's a waste of time letting Ocon past and tells the Force India pit wall "I want to race him". He's reassured that they would switch back if Ocon can't get past Ricciardo. But with the Ferraris gaining this is about to get messy.

Lap 57

Perez says he wants to have a go at Ricciardo in traffic. He is not going to move over for Ocon. He is told he will get three more laps behind Ricciardo and then switch, but that is exactly when Raikkonen will be behind Ocon and looking to pass.

Lap 58

In case you were wondering, Hamilton still has a comfortably 14s ahead of Bottas, who has a 14s margin over Ricciardo.

Lap 59

Ocon is closing on Perez again. Once again, Perez doesn't make it easy, but Ocon is pushing hard now.

Raikkonen is now 3.0s behind Ocon.

Lap 60

Vettel remains 3.4s off Raikkonen and is lapping at a similarly quick pace.

Lap 61

Radio to Raikkonen: "You know the score, the front of this pack is the podium."

He's now 2.1s off Ocon.

Vettel passes Raikkonen! It looks like Raikkonen made a mistake at the final chicane and went straight on. That let Vettel past.

Lap 62

So Vettel is now 2.3s behind Ocon, who remains stuck behind Perez.

Raikkonen complained about his brakes before heading off the track. Perhaps they were starting to give up - it is a hard braking track here.

Lap 63

Raikkonen is losing a lot of time as his engineer tries to coach him through a solution.

Vettel is now within 0.5s of Ocon. He's about to go on the attack. He has fresher, softer tyres and three cars between him and the podium.

Lap 64

Raikkonen still trying to find a solution in the cockpit of the Ferrari.

Ocon attacks Perez into the final chicane, who was out of DRS range of Ricciardo. He doesn't quite get it done, but Vettel is right on the rear of Ocon as a result.,

Lap 65

Vettel goes deep into the hairpin and loses time as Ocon lines up Perez again. Perez gets the inside line and holds him off.

Lap 66

Ocon attacks Perez but is blocked into Turn 1 and Vettel takes advantage by going deep on the inside of the corner and bullying Ocon off the track.

Lap 67

Now Vettel misses the braking zone at Turns 8 and 9 and Ocon is right back on his tail. So it's now Perez, Vettel, Ocon. The Force Indias scrapping gave Vettel fifth, but it was a great move to pass.

Lap 68

Vettel is back on the tail of Perez again now. Ricciardo is scampering away in third as a result of all this.

Alonso retires from tenth place. There goes McLaren's first point of the season.

Lap 69

Another great move by Vettel sees him pass Perez into the final chicane. He takes fourth after damaging his front wing on the first lap.

A replay shows Alonso's engine letting go.

Ocon is still attacking Perez and trying to pass into the final chicane. But it makes you wonder what could have been if Ocon had the pace to pass Ricciardo earlier.

Lap 70

Hamilton crosses the line to win his third race of the season! He wins for the sixth time in Canada and Bottas makes it Mercedes' first one-two finish of the season.

Ricciardo takes third in the Red Bull. Vettel fourth.

Ocon attacks Perez for the final time at the final chicane, but once again Perez holds off his teammate.

Raikkonen keeps it all in one piece to take seventh. Hulkenberg takes eighth and it's Stroll in ninth at his home race, taking the first points of his career. Grosjean takes the final point in tenth despite the first lap tangle with Sainz.

Hamilton celebrates on top of his Mercedes with a Union Flag in hand. He celebrates with teammate Bottas before running to his mechanics for further hugs and back slaps.

Thanks for joining us here. Not a very exciting race at the front, but the cars behind more than made up for it.

Ocon on the (not so) cool down lap: "He cannot do that, it's not fair racing at all." They pull up next to each other in parc ferme but the camera cuts to Hamilton before we get to see the reaction.
