Race

Hello and welcome to ESPN's live coverage of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

-----------------------------------------------------------

14:00 The formation lap is underway. We are just moments away from lights out!

----

13:59 We are just minutes away from the start. Who will triumph to victory? Will Ferrari scamper into the distance, or can Mercedes and Red Bull challenge? It's time to find out. Keep it here with ESPN.

----

13:57 "The rear tyres are going to die. I doubt they'll even last to the first stop," reports Hamilton.

----

13:55 A late panic at Mercedes as mechanics surround Hamilton's car and desperately try to cool it down. His W08 appears to be overheating on the grid -- which shouldn't affect the start, but could play an impact later on in the race with temperatures close to 30 degrees Celsius.

----

13:53 The McLaren duo of Alonso and Vandoorne are next up in seventh and eighth places respectively. A big race for McLaren, with the team hoping to secure a strong double points finish at a circuit which presents the team with a very good opportunity of a strong performance given that it is not a power dependant circuit.

----

13:50 Behind the leading two teams come the Red Bulls headed by Verstappen. It was a disappointing qualifying session for the Milton Keynes-based outfit, who showed much promise having topped both practice sessions on Friday -- at a circuit which traditionally plays to Red Bull's strengths. Keep an eye on both drivers at the start, who will keen to make up ground quickly. Ricciardo has already promised he won't finish where he starts, warning the rest of the grid he doesn't expect to have "too many friends" by the end of the 70-lap race.

----

13:45 It's time for the national anthem of Hungary!

----

13:43 Interestingly, the polesitter has only won on two occasions in the last nine races in Hungary. Those wins were both taken by Hamilton -- who starts fourth today -- in 2012 with McLaren and his first victory with Mercedes in 2013.

----

13:40 Overtaking is notoriously difficult in Hungary, with only 18 overtakes occurring in last year's race. Only 10 of those were non-DRS assisted passes, too.

----

13:37 Perhaps the best chance for Mercedes to make any inroads into Ferraris apparent pace advantage will come at the start. The Hungaroring has the fifth longest run down to Turn 1 on the calendar at over 600 metres. Turns 2 and 3 also present overtaking opportunities on the opening lap.

----

13:35 Ferrari surged to a front-row lockout in qualifying, with Vettel taking his second pole of the season ahead of teammate Raikkonen. As expected, the Hungaroring's characteristics played into Ferrari's hands as it was able to lock-out the front row for the third time this year. Mercedes -- similar to Monaco and Russia -- struggled and have been forced to settle with the second row.

----

13:30 The pitlane is open for business as the drivers head out for their installation laps, before forming up on their respective grid positions. This is the final chance to complete system checks in their cars and practice starts. An important period for the driver in the build up to every race.

Lap 1

Lights out!

It's a good start from Vettel, who leads away Raikkonen. Hamilton has lost out to the Red Bulls and drops to seventh.

Ricciardo spins! He drops right to the back and looks to be out of the race.

Lap 2

The Safety Car is deployed for Ricciardo's stranded car. It looks like Ricciardo made contact with teammate Verstappen.

Hamilton made a good initial getaway and was challenging teammate Bottas for third, but was bunched out as the Red Bulls swept around the outside.

Replays show that Verstappen locked up into Turn 2 and ran into the side of his teammate! A nightmare scenario for the Red Bull team. The first rule of racing is to not hit your teammate.

Sainz has made a fantastic start and is up to sixth, having started from ninth.

Lap 3

The stewards are looking into that first-lap incident involving Ricciardo and Verstappen. It looked like Ricciardo was the guilty party, with Verstappen locking up and sliding into his teammate.

Lap 4

"I've been massively hit. The guy is stupid," reports Grosjean.

The Haas driver was hit at Turn 1 by Hulkenberg, before later being pushed wide by Ericsson. That first corner incident is also being investigated by the stewards.

Lap 5

The Safety Car remains out on Lap 5.

"If you can do what Hulkenberg did to Romain, then it's going to be a dirty race," Magnussen says over team radio. They are not a happy bunch down at Haas after that start.

The Safety Car is coming in at the end of this lap.

Lap 6

We are racing once more in Hungary as Vettel leads the pack away.

Hamilton tries a move around the outside of Verstappen into Turn 1 but Verstappen holds him off, as the Spaniards of Sainz and Alonso duel behind.

Sainz manages to kept Alonso at bay, with both drivers in sixth and seventh respectively.

Lap 7

Vettel leads by 1.2s at the beginning of Lap 7.

Henrick says: Time for RBR to demote Verstappen to Toro Rossi as the kid must learn the basics of F1. Sainz is a more than adequate replacement as there wasn't much between him and Verstappen when they were together at TR and he will bring home good points unlike DNF-Max. Let Kvyat and Verstappen crash each other at TR where it doesn't hurt RBR in the constructors!

Verstappen has been handed a 10s time penalty for causing a collision with Ricciardo.

Lap 8

Palmer heads Renault teammate Hulkenberg as the pair look to hunt down the top ten.

Bottas has fallen back from Raikkonen, with Verstappen still ahead of Hamilton.

Lap 9

A new fastest lap from Vettel on a 1:22.457s as the German extends his advantage at the front.

Lap 11

The two Ferraris are absolutely flying now, with Bottas lapping around 1s slower than Raikkonen and Vettel.

Cooling and tyre preservation is going to be key as this race goes on, which could end up hurting Mercedes.

Lap 12

Palmer is now within DRS range of 10th-placed Ocon.

Mercedes tells Hamilton it has solved its IT issue.

Lap 13

John says: Henrick must be a Spanish Guy !!

Lap 14

No further action for the Hulkenberg/Grosjean Turn 1 clash. It has been deemed a first lap racing incident.

Hulkenberg tells his team he is going to take "a little breather" from the guys ahead.

Lap 15

Yellows briefly fly in sector one, though whatever issue occurred has been cleared very quickly.

Tom Dalgleish says: Verstappen's shunt on Ricciardo looked deliberate.

Replays show Alonso and Sainz banging wheels down at Turn 1, with Alonso forced off track.

Lap 16

Vettel has a nice 3s gap over teammate Raikkonen as the Ferraris both continue to run in clear air.

Lap 17

"I don't have a big enough delta to get past," Hamilton reports.

Might be a case of playing the long game for Hamilton, with the Briton just 1.8s down on Verstappen, who will serve a 10s penalty.

Lap 18

No further action taken by the stewards following the collision between Sainz and Alonso.

Lap 19

All the front runners are now keeping tabs on Ferraris pace, with the Mercedes and Red Bull of Verstappen joining Vettel and Raikkonen in the mid 1:22s

Hulkenberg dives down the inside of Renault teammate Palmer into Turn 1, as the German moves up into 11th.

Confirmation from Renault that Palmer was asked to let Hulkenberg through. The team told Hulkenberg over team radio that "Jo is slower than you."

Lap 20

Di Resta has gained two places in the early stages of this race and is up to 17th for Williams.

Lap 21

Grosjean is told to pit with a tyre problem.

His reply over team radio: "Wonderful!"

He takes on a set of yellow-striped soft tyres, which -- despite pitting earlier than planned -- should see him go to the end.

Lap 22

Or maybe not.

Grosjean suddenly slows in the middle sector and is told to return to the pits. Haas believe they have cross-threaded wheel nut.

Lap 23

Grosjean cannot even make it back to the pits as he stops on off track to become the second retirement this afternoon. That's his third DNF of the year.

Lap 24

Raikkonen has caught Vettel over the last six laps. He has gone from being 2.9s behind to now just over 2s.

Lap 25

Bottas is now 7s behind the Ferrari pair, with Hamilton around 15s down on Vettel.

Lap 26

Looks like Mercedes still have some radio problems. Both drivers are being very quiet over team radio.

Lap 27

Grosjean's possible unsafe release will be investigated after the race.

The gap continues to come down at the front, with Vettel leading Raikkonen by 1.9s.

Lap 28

Vettel's front left tyre looks very worn. We have now pretty much entered the pit stop window, so it will be interesting to see who makes the first move.

Ricciardo was not happy with Verstappen when he spoke to media following his retirement. He branded his Red Bull teammate an "amateur" following their collision.

Lap 29

Raikkonen is catching Vettel, while the Mercedes drivers are also on the move. Bottas has begun to close in on Raikkonen, as Hamilton looks to reel in Verstappen's Red Bull.

Lap 30

Vettel looks to be having some issues with his steering, as Raikkonen cuts the gap to 1.3s. The Finn is almost within DRS range of his teammate. This could get interesting down at Ferrari.

Lap 31

Bottas heads into the pits and switches onto the soft tyre. A 3.5s stop for Bottas -- not the greatest stop for the Finn. Replays show the front left was slow on.

Lap 32

"Fronts are not in a healthy state. Don't extend it," reports Vettel.

Hamilton stops and also changes onto the softs. A much better stop for Hamilton, with his pit stop being 1s faster than Bottas.

Lap 33

Hamilton has gained massively on Bottas thanks to that quicker stop.

Ferrari are getting ready with soft tyres. It is for race-leader Vettel, who switches onto the soft tyre.

Bottas sets a new fastest lap of the race, while Hamilton is also running well.

Lap 34

Raikkonen now stops and takes on a set of fresh softs.

Raikkonen returns to the track only just behind Vettel! The Finn is less than 1s behind Vettel.

Raikkonen tells Ferrari he believes he had the pace to stay out for another lap.

Lap 35

Verstappen -- who is yet to stop -- now leads the race ahead of Vettel and Raikkonen.

"No front left, or rear left," reports Sainz.

Lap 36

Hamilton is now just 1.2s down on his teammate.

Alonso and Sainz take their battle to the pitlane, with Toro Rosso winning the pit stop duel as Sainz comes out marginally ahead of his fellow countryman.

Alonso runs wide into the chicane but stays behind Sainz.

Lap 37

Hamilton is now right behind Bottas.

Lap 38

Alonso dives down the inside of Sainz at Turn 1 and holds onto the position as he hangs it around the outside of Sainz at Turn 2. Lovely move from the McLaren driver, who is up to ninth.

Lap 39

Mercedes are really catching Ferrari now. Vettel is struggling and holding up the faster Raikkonen behind, which is allowing Mercedes to catch up!

Lap 40

What will Ferrari do? if it wants to win this race, surely the Scuderia should allow Raikkonen through. Though, that wouldn't go down well in the Vettel camp.

Lap 41

All four cars are within the pit straight of one another.

Lap 42

Verstappen, meanwhile, continues to run at the front of the field on the super-softs. He has now completed 42 laps on the softest compound available this weekend.

Lap 43

All three cars behind Vettel are running 0.3s quicker than the German.

Bottas is told to close down and attack Raikkonen, as Verstappen finally pits. The Dutchman also serves his 10s penalty.

Lap 44

Vettel, who continues to struggle with a steering issue, leads by 1.7s from Raikkonen.

Hamilton has his radio back and tells Mercedes he has "lots of pace".

Lap 45

"Let me know when I can race Valtteri," says Hamilton.

Lap 46

Hamilton has got past Bottas and is up to third. That was a definite team order, with Bottas slowing down into Turn 1 to let Hamilton have a go at challenging the Ferraris.

Lap 47

Hamilton wasn't lying -- he posts a stunning 1:20.890s as he closes in on the back of Raikkonen.

This is fascinating. Ferrari continue to keep Vettel ahead of Raikkonen, as Hamilton closes to within 0.6s of Raikkonen.

Lap 48

Hamilton is visibly quicker now he has been released by Bottas. Meanwhile there are problems down at Renault, with Hulkenberg being delayed in the pits with a slow stop.

Lap 49

Bottas is told that Hamilton will let Bottas back through if he cannot find a way past Raikkonen.

Lap 50

Vettel and Hamilton match their previous best laps last time around, with Raikkonen now the slowest of the top four.

2.3s is the gap between Vettel and Hamilton.

Lap 51

Hamilton is just shy of getting DRS assistance in his quest to pass Raikkonen.

Lap 52

Mercedes informs Hamilton that he has five laps to try and get a move done. After that, the team will instruct Hamilton to let Bottas back through.

Lap 53

Raikkonen is now within DRS range of Vettel as he attacks his teammate. The Finn has pulled 1.6s clear of Hamilton.

Lap 54

Hulkenberg is battling away with Magnussen over 11th place, with Vandoorne currently occupying the final points paying position in 10th.

Lap 55

Hamilton has closed back up to Raikkonen, who tells his team he is going to ruin his tyres if he continues to be stuck behind Vettel.

Lap 56

Away from the leaders, Alonso is having a fantastic run in sixth place, ahead of Sainz, Perez, Ocon and Vandoorne.

Lap 57

Verstappen runs wide at Turn 11 but continues on his way without any major dramas.

Lap 58

Hamilton is told he has been given an extra five laps to try and pass Raikkonen.

Lap 59

Hamilton closes onto the back of Raikkonen but is unable to make a move into Turn 1. He is really fighting his Mercedes in the dirty air of Raikkonen, as he runs slightly wide into Turn 5.

Lap 60

Vettel is starting to pull clear of teammate Raikkonen. The German has extended his advantage to 1.7s on this lap.

Lap 61

Hamilton continues to run on the cusp of getting a DRS boost. He keeps getting within 0.7-0.9s of Raikkonen but it is not proving enough to make a move at Turn 1.

Lap 62

Hulkenberg tries to overtake Magnussen around the outside of Turn 2, but is forced wide and loses ground.

Lap 63

Di Resta is told to box into retirement with an unspecified issue on his Williams. A shame for the Briton, who had been doing a solid job throughout this race.

Lap 64

Red Bull tells Verstappen to start pushing up to the back of Bottas, who is 3.8s behind the Mercedes driver.

Lap 65

Hamilton has dropped well back from Raikkonen, is he preparing to let Bottas back past?

Verstappen is just 2.5s behind Bottas now. This is getting dangerously close for Mercedes to pull of a switch without allowing the Red Bull a sniff.

Lap 66

Verstappen further closes the gap to Bottas and is just 1.5s adrift. He is also just 10s off the lead. What could have been without that penalty

Lap 67

Four laps remaining in Hungary. Verstappen, on those fresher soft tyres, is now within DRS range of Bottas -- who is 6s behind teammate Hamilton. Surely the Briton cannot now let Bottas past.

Lap 68

Hamilton is 1.8s down on Raikkonen but over 6s clear of Bottas. Verstappen pushes hard through the chicane as he gets sideways in his attempts to close in on the Mercedes driver.

Lap 69

Just two laps to go! Verstappen has fallen back from Bottas on that last lap and is now longer within DRS range.

Hulkenberg is back in the Renault pits and looks to be out of this race.

Lap 70

Vettel begins his final lap. The German has now led more laps in 2017 than in 2016 and 2015 combined.

Vettel crosses the line to takes his fourth win of the season!

Verstappen takes fifth just behind the Mercedes pair, with Alonso finishing a superb sixth for McLaren. Sainz is seventh, ahead of Perez and Ocon, while Vandoorne scores his first points of the season to complete a double points finish for McLaren.

Raikkonen completes a Ferrari one-two, while Hamilton lets Bottas back through at the last corner as promised.

With that victory, Vettel has extended his championship lead to 14 points over Hamilton.

Regarding Alonso's fantastic drive to sixth, he managed to post the fastest lap of the race on the final lap!

And with that we now head into the summer break, with Vettel back in control of proceedings at the top of the championship. Thanks for joining us today, enjoy the summer break, and we will see you back here for Belgian Grand Prix in four weeks' time.
