Coletti wins sprint race in Malaysia

Stefano Coletti won the GP2 sprint race in Malaysia after a first lap accident took out some of his main competitors.

Felipe Nasr took second place ahead of Mitch Evans as both found a way past Stephane Richelmi who started from pole position but dropped to fourth by the end of the race.

Coletti made a strong start to lead at the end of the first lap, taking advantage of a collision caused by James Calado's out of control ART. The incident happened on the approach to turn four as Calado got caught out by Fabio Leimer braking earlier than Calado had expected, forcing the ART to take to the grass. Once off the circuit he lost the ability to slow his car and piled into Julian Leal and Sam Bird, who were innocently negotiating the apex of turn four, taking all three out of the race.

For the middle part of the race little happened, but tyre degradation came into play in the final laps, resulting in Nasr closing in on Coletti. But after losing the lead in the feature race in similar circumstances, Coletti made certain of victory on Sunday by managing the gap to the Brazilian.

Johnny Cecotto also came under fire in fifth with Simon Trummer putting the pressure on, but in the end a mistake meant Trummer had to fight off Connor Daly to hold on to sixth. Rene Binder took the final points in eighth ahead of Joylon Palmer, who failed to get away on the formation lap and had to make his way back through the field from the pit lane to ninth. Feature race winner Leimer fell to 12th after running sixth at one point as he appeared to struggle with his tyres towards the end of the race.

Ma Qing Hua did not race after being diagnosed with gastroenteritis leading to extreme dehydration after Saturday's race.
