Impressive Palmer wins in Hungary

Jolyon Palmer won the GP2 feature race at the Hungarian grand Prix from seventh on the grid after making use of an alternative strategy to come out on top.

Palmer started the race on the medium compound tyres, allowing him to make a later pit stop than his rivals on softs and then attack Ericsson on fresher rubber in the second half of the race. It took three attempts for Palmer to make the move stick after an audacious effort at turn three on lap 17 that didn't pay off. After a tense battle he found a way past at turn two on lap 28 and with fresher medium tyres moved away to win by 15.4s.

Ericsson then had his hands full fending off Felipe Nasr, who had made a good start and led before the pit stops. Ericsson passed Nasr on lap 10 around the outside of turn two after the first pit stop, but by the end of the race Nasr was on the attack and came closest to passing around the outside of the penultimate corner on lap 32. Ericsson ran him wide and, although it looked unintentional, the stewards investigated the incident after the race.

Fabio Leimer was fourth ahead of Stephane Richelmi and Simon Trummer. Mitch Evans attempted the same strategy as Palmer and finished seventh as a result ahead of Nathanael Berthon. James Calado took ninth ahead of Sam Bird who slipped several positions in the last few laps after a disappointing race. However, his team-mate Tom Dillmann had one of the worst races of all, dropping several places from pole position at the start and then getting rear ended by Johnny Cecotto. The damage dropped him to 20th by the end of the race.
