Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali has admitted that a poor result at this weekend's Italian Grand Prix will prompt his team to abandon its championship challenge.
After crashing out of the Belgian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso is 41 points behind championship leader Lewis Hamilton with six races remaining. Ferrari brought some updates to Spa Francorchamps that failed to improve performance and left it off the pace of both McLaren and Red Bull in qualifying and the race.
"Should Monza go really badly and Red Bull's lead continues to increase, then on Monday we will begin to use all of our staff and resources for the project of next season's car," Domenicali told Corriere dello Sport.
However, he said Ferrari now had a better understanding of its updates and Plan A was to go to Monza and win.
"Winning at Monza is not unthinkable, because we have understood where we went wrong with the improvements in Spa. We know now how to get the best from these parts," Domenicali said.
He added that Alonso was the right man for the job.
"Alonso reminds me very much of Schumacher. Since I've been with Ferrari, I have not seen a driver who has as strong a presence in Maranello, and follows all of our activities with the same conviction."
Before heading to Monza, Domenicali will face the FIA World Motor Sport Council on Wednesday over the team orders controversy at the German Grand Prix.
