Race

Lights out!

----

2:02: Rosberg leads the field back to the grid and takes his position on pole. The pack filters into their spaces behind him. We are moments away from lights out now....

2:00: The two green lights go out and everyone gets underway cleanly for the formation lap.

Raikkonen, Grosjean and Hamilton the only drivers to opt for the soft tyre. Interesting call with the prospect of rain, especially for Hamilton considering he needs to make those positions up. Though it means he will have the super-soft in hand late on if the rain does stay away, of course...

Everyone else starts on the red-striped option super-soft tyre.

---

1:59: Two DRS zones at Hockenheim. The first is immediately after Turn 1, with the detection point 110m before the right-hander. The second is 260m along the Parabolika back straight, with detection starting at the exit of Turn 4.

---

<1:58: The tyre blankets come off and the cars get lowered onto the grid. Formation lap about to get underway.

---

1:55: In 2010, Fernando Alonso won the race after his nation won the FIFA World Cup. Can Nico Rosberg follow suit this afternoon? Stick with us to find out. Final checks being done to the cars on the grid.

---

1:54:

---

1:52: The final drivers are getting in their cars and waiting for the start of the formation lap. Not long now until these cars start rolling.

---

1:50: Force India occupies the fifth row. We've seen the team get brave with its strategy calls this season, with bold long stints in Canada and Austria working well for Sergio Perez. Hard to gauge Force India's pace on Fridays, Nico Hulkenberg reportedly likes to run with heavy fuel loads during practice in order to find his ultimate race set-up. We've seen flashes of brilliance from Perez this season as well, so with those two starting alongside each other it sets up an interest prospect if they get a good jump off the line.

---

1:49: Contrasting fortunes on Saturday again for Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso. Kimi made a slight mistake on his crucial run after showing some promising pace and ultimately paid the price, dropping out of Q2 with fellow former champion Jenson Button.

Alonso, meanwhile, seemed to once again get the most out of the F14T and lines up seventh, alongside the increasingly impressive Daniil Kvyat.

---

1:48: The FIA weather service now reporting there's a 60% chance of rain.

---

1:46: German national anthem being sung now. Someone has been ruthlessly efficient and organised the German crowd into holding up black, red and yellow cards in the sky. Making the German flag, of course. Efficiently.

1:45: If the F1 race had been run this morning it would have been rather volatile weather. That said, the morning rain set up an absolutely thrilling GP2 sprint race.

---

1:43: Good way of summing it up:

1:42: Looking at the radar, there is a small possibility of rain before the start of the race (around 10%). Some bigger, more menacing clouds are lingering and they should move across the track around half an hour after the start.

---

1:38: The Red Bulls line up on the third row and will certainly be hoping for more competitive pace than it showed in qualifying. The team hoped to challenge Williams for the 'best of the rest' at the moment and yesterday certainly wouldn't have been part of the plan.

After qualifying Sebastian Vettel said he expected more from the updates brought to the circuit by Red Bull and Renault. Let's see how that one plays out in the race.

---

1:35: Looking elsewhere on the grid, behind Mercedes, is really quite fascinating. If the rain stays away it should be a straight shootout between Bottas and Massa for second, but I'm really curious to see how Magnussen's McLaren does from the second row. McLaren has clearly made a little bit of a step forward but how that will translate over a race distance remains to be seen.

---

1:32: Disappointing to see a lot of empty seats in the grandstands here. The last three races - Canada, Austria and Great Britain - were all awash with people and atmosphere. There's something a little bit flat about this weekend.

A German dominating F1 is hardly new news to Germans though, is it....

----

1:30: The one weather certainty I can give (I'm English, therefore an expert) you is that it is decidedly cooler than it was yesterday, giving the teams less of a headache with regards to tyre degradation. The super-soft tyre was absolutely shredding in FP2 on Friday afternoon.

---

1:27: Hard to know how Caterham failed to cover and seal their car. Might have something to do with changes or lack of clarity in procedures with its new management in place? Either way, a frustrating start to Ericsson's day.

Caterham's failure to abide by parc ferme rules was noted three-and-a-half hours after qualifying finished.

---

1:25: Some early grid news for you. This morning it was confirmed Lewis Hamilton will drop five places on the grid for an overnight gearbox change. He has also taken on Carbon Industrie brakes used by team-mate Nico Rosberg for the race.

Marcus Ericsson will start from the pit lane and, just to add insult to injury, has to serve a 10-second stop/go penalty within three laps as the team failed to cover and seal car after qualifying.

1:23: Though not everyone is convinced by the prospect of rain...

---

1:20:It looks like the only thing that could stop Nico Rosberg from a lights-to-flag win could be the rain, with a 40% chance of rain forecast ahead of the weekend. Williams will certainly be crossing its fingers for the odd shower or two. It's pace over one lap is close to Mercedes but over a race distance it is still not in a position to compete.

Lap 1

Huge crash at the first corner! It's Felipe Massa who cartwheels around after contact from Magnussen. What is it with Massa and first-corner incidents? Safety car out.

Massa is safely out of his car.

Looking at the replay, Magnussen made a great start off the line and it appears Massa turned in on him coming into Turn 1. Hard to blame Magnussen for that one.

Ricciardo also did well to avoid making contact with either driver, but that cost him hugely. He's now down in 15th.

Lap 2

Saferty car in this lap.

Lap 3

We are underway again, no change to the order as Rosberg gets a good start away. Hamilton breezes past Chilton at Turn 2 for 16th.

Magnussen told strategically he is still in a good position despite that incident. He's currently down in 21st.

Lap 4

Rosberg sets a fastest lap, a 1:22.320. He's going to breeze away now.

Maldonado yields to his old foe Hamilton at Turn 2.

Button all over the back of Hulkenberg, who has jumped to fifth after that opening incident. Great defensive driving from Hulkenberg keeps Button's McLaren at bay.

Lap 5

DRS is now enabled. Rosberg's lead already nearly two seconds. Hamilton dispatches the other Lotus of Grosjean at Turn 1 for 13th. Ricciardo the next man for Hamilton to pass....

Lap 6

Another fastest lap for Rosberg, a 1:22.165. The gap now up to 2.5 seconds.

In all of that drama at the start, I haven't mentioned Vettel and Alonso, who are third and fourth. Big opportunity for both has opened up now.

Hamilton right up behind Ricciardo but he would not have expected to come up against a competitive car so quickly.

Lap 7

Ericsson has also served his stop/go penalty for his parc ferme infringement, by the way, which explains why he's 23 seconds.

Ricciardo sweeps by Sutil, followed by Hamilton through the hairpin - there was a bit of contact from the Sauber but it doesn't look fatal to Hamilton.

The stewards will be taking no further action for the incident between Massa and Magnussen. Too right as well, a racing incident - would have been outrageous to penalise Magnussen for that.

Lap 8

Another fastest lap for Rosberg, a 1:21.807.

Hamilton's race could well be jeopardised by the presence of Ricciardo here, not exactly what Mercedes would have been expecting.

Hulkenberg tells Force India that his understeer is "incredible".

Lap 9

Rosberg's lead is up to five seconds out in front. He just needs to keep this between the lines this afternoon and the race win is his, you feel.

Hamilton told he's free to "use the overtake" on Ricciardo. Kvyat and Perez are tussling for seventh and he goes around the outside but they make contact! Kvyat spins off and he just didn't give Perez any space there. Perez says "what was he doing?" on the radio and he has a point.

Kvyat comes into the pit lane. A promising afternoon ruined for the young rookie.

Lap 10

Hamilton has a look at Ricciardo coming through the hairpin but the Australian is wise to him. Shaping up to be a great battle here.

Lap 11

Hamilton just three tenths down on Ricciardo and surely has enough in the straights. There's a huge train behind Perez and behind Hamilton dives down the inside of the hairpin, has to back off to avoid hitting Raikkonen and Ricciardo reclaims the position.

Ricciardo dives down the inside of Raikkonen at the next corner and he's up into eighth. Hamilton now all over Raikkonen through the stadium section but he runs out of room!!! He backs off.

Lap 12

That was superb, both going through side-by-side there. Wonderful passing move from Ricciardo on Raikkonen as well, he just launched it down the inside of Turn 7. Ricciardo now all over the back of Perez, who said he had no damage from that earlier clash with Kvyat.

Raikkonen and Hamilton two of the three drivers to start on the soft tyre remember.

Alonso pits for a set of soft tyre. We'll start seeing the super-soft runners coming in now.

Lap 13

Hamilton slides past Raikkonen and Ricciardo at the hairpin but there was some bodywork which went flying through the air! Wonderful, ballsy move from Hamilton but has he damaged his car?

It actually looks like something came off Raikkonen's front wing but it doesn't look serious.

Lap 14

Hamilton now past Perez and he's up to sixth. Wonderful charge from Hamilton, he knew he had to get past Ricciardo and he did it in fine style.

Peter Bonnington had warned him one lap earlier "let's just make sure we get the car home". He must be sweating a bit on that pit wall at the moment!

Lap 15

Vettel now sandwitched between the two Ferraris after his stop. Raikkonen and Vettel touch and the Finn loses more bodywork on his car! Vettel gets out in front, what a race we've had so far.

Lap 16

Rosberg and Bottas pit for soft tyres. Hamilton is now up to third, but remember is on an alternate strategy and is yet to pit.

Seeing a replay of Vettel, Raikkonen and Alonso again. Vettel went on the inside and Kimigot squeezed between the Red Bull and his team-mate. It looked like he may have had the undercut on Vettel coming out of the hairpin but the world champion emerged in front.

Hamilton four seconds ahead of Vettel and is told he doesn't need to save fuel at present.

Lap 17

This race now becomes how far Hamilton can go on this rubber. Sorry, Hamilton is actually in front of Bottas. Behind Bottas, Alonso has got in front of Raikkonen - his tyres must be starting to go off as is yet to pit.

Lap 18

Sutil and Chilton make their first stop for soft tyres.

Lap 19

Hamilton told he's already forecast P2 "even if Bottas overtakes". Surely he can't get higher than that in this race? It would be quite the result if he could.

Ricciardo dives past Grosjean for 11th. The Red Bull driver recently pitted for soft tyres, remember.

Bottas says there are small drops of rain on his visor but Williams says there's nothing significant on the radar currently. Certainly grey clouds forming at the moment.

Lap 20

Bottas six tenths behind Hamilton now. Hamilton told it's not critical to keep Bottas behind and he obliges, not putting up much of a fight as Bottas sweeps by at the hairpin. Are Mercedes trying to get Hamilton onto a one stop? Or just stretch out the current stint for as long as possible?

Lap 21

Hulkenberg passes Raikkonen for P6 as Ricciardo makes short work of Magnussen into the hairpin.

Raikkonen pits for fresh soft tyres. He comes out ahead of Kvyat in 15th. Maldonado the latest driver to use the hairpin to his advantage, diving down the inside of the Russian.

Lap 22

Grosjean passes Perez for 11th - the Lotus looking a little more handy than it was in practice. Looks like Perez got by the Frenchman and then ran wide, allowing Grosjean to reclaim the position.

Hamilton's pace is really starting to drop off. Only Hamilton and Grosjean are yet to pit.

Lap 23

Perez is back past Grosjean, who now has Raikkonen all over his mirrors. Grosjean cannot hold off the Ferrari at the hairpin.

A rather frustrated engineer tells Perez he needs to lift and coast, and says "it's the last time I'm going to ask you." Tetchy.

Lap 24

Incident between Grosjean and Vergne under investigation for gaining an advantage for leaving the track.

Hamilton's last lap was a full second slower than Rosberg's.

Lap 25

More radio gold. Peter Bonnington relays an instruction to Hamilton and he replies "I've never heard of that switch."

"Don't worry about it mate" comes the replay.

It seems Hamilton will be pitting very soon, but not this lap as he continues for another lap.

Lap 26

Vettel now within 1.8 seconds of Hamilton.

In all the melee I didn't notice Raikkonen has put on another set of super-soft tyres. He swings by JEV for tenth, he's absolutely flying currently. He then cruises by Magnussen for ninth!

Grosjean pits for softs.

Lap 27

Hamilton pits for what Mercedes confirm will be another set of soft tyres. Mercedes keeping a super-soft tyres in reserve so he will be on a two-stop strategy. Hamilton rejoins 8th.

Will be interesting to see how long Raikkonen's tyres last but Hamilton should come back around lap 40.

Lap 28

Grosjean has pulled up on the side of the race track and complains there is a "problem with the power".

After all that, Hamilton finds himself back behind Ricciardo! He'll have to pass him all over again to make this stint work.

Lap 29

Hamilton makes a lot easier work of it this time, flying by Ricciardo on the exit of the hairpin. Hamilton does well to defend from the Red Bull.

Great onboard shot of Hulkenberg using both hands to adjust buttons on his steering wheel on the run down to Turn 6. So much work for these drivers to do race by race, it is easy to forget that.

Lap 30

Hamilton makes contact with Button and there's damage with his front wing! Looks like the cascade came off it, he should be ok to continue, albeit with a bit more understeer. That was another ballsy move through the hairpin.

Hamilton says "I damaged my front wing, I thought he was letting me past." It does look like Button turned in late but its possible he didn't see his former McLaren team-mate.

Lap 31

Hamilton makes the move stick this time around and Button, perhaps understandably, gives him plenty of room at the hairpin. Doesn't appear Hamilton is having too much problem without that part of his front wing.

As he passes Hamilton sticks a hand out to Button by way of apology for earlier incident.

Lap 32

Rosberg's lead now 14 seconds. He's having a very quiet race but he won't be complaining whatsoever. I wonder how much he is being told about Hamilton's plight?

Hamilton 1.5s off Hulkenberg now and you can see just how much he closes up to the Force India down the straight.

Gutierrez dives into the pit lane.

Lap 33

Hamilton asks Mercedes whether he can afford to pit, he is told the team is assessing his strategy but he's still the fastest man out there so I can't imagine anything will change at the moment.

Hamilton screams up behind Hulkenberg into the hairpin and the German doesn't even try to keep the position. Hamilton up to fifth.

Lap 34

Hamilton taking advantage of his low-downforce spec Mercedes now, which of course will be less tough on the tyres than the guys around him.

Raikkonen already asking to come off the super-soft tyre, a good indication as to why Mercedes is trying to stretch out Hamilton's second stint on the soft compound.

Lap 35

Vettel stops from P3 and gets out ahead of Alonso, who pitted one lap earlier, but then Alonso breezes past the Red Bull on the run down to Turn 6. He runs a little wide at the hairpin and Vettel sniffs an opportunity but the Spaniard keeps Vettel at bay.

Lap 36

Raikkonen and Perez pit now.

Alonso sets a fastest lap, a 1:21.69, on his fresh soft tyre. Hamilton had momentarily set one of his own just before that on tyres 10 laps older.

Lap 37

Ricciardo now makes his second stop of the afternoon.

Lap 38

Hamilton's last lap a 1:22.146, still quicker than Bottas and Rosberg, so he's not having a huge issue after that front wing problem.

Alonso now moving up behind Hulkenberg in P4. Alonso locks up going into Turn 2 otherwise he may have had a bit of a sniff. Coming down the backstraight Alonso passes Hulkenberg, who is then powerless to stop Vettel moving by on the inside through the hairpin.

Lap 39

Worth noting Alonso and Vettel are possibly on a three-stop strategy, Hulkenberg probably just on two stops. Hence why he didn't put up much of a fight there. Still a really fascinating duel forming there.

Ricciardo now sets the fastest lap of the race, a 1:21.203.

Lap 40

Rosberg, who you could be forgiven for forgetting is still out on the track, complains he is now struggling with his rears. Hamilton's front left looking really worn.

Hulkenberg pits and takes on a new set of soft tyres.

Lap 41

If you're just joining now, Hamilton has done two runs on the soft tyre, with a run on the super-soft to come.

He tells Mercedes his front left is not going to last and its easy to agree with him.

Bottas emerges from his pit stop ahead of Alonso and Vettel, and that may well be for a spot on the podium.

Lap 42

Rosberg pits for new soft tyres.

Real strategic headache for Mercedes with Hamilton. Either they switch to a three-stopper now and let him charge or they gamble that he can, in fact, eek out his current set for the allotted time.

Vettel told he needs to save fuel and then grumpily asks Red Bull to make it clear to him what he wants to do, pass Alonso or save fuel.

Lap 43

Hamilton coming in to the pits. Mercedes changes Hamilton's strategy mid-race. He gets a set of super-soft tyres and a little bit more front wing.

Hamilton gets out ahead of Button and Ricciardo, so can charge up the road to Vettel and Alonso.

Mercedes told he needs to manage his tyres for 13 laps but should have good pace.

Ricciardo and Button duelling for sixth and Ricciardo locks up coming into Turn 8 but the two avoid making contact, Button manages to hold on to the position and the Red Bull will have to try again.

Lap 44

We have to think Hamilton has two more stints on the super-soft tyre to come, but as we saw with Raikkonen earlier making those last for around 13 laps could be one hell of an ask.

Still no sign of the forecast rain, by the way. I think everyone has forgotten about that.

Ricciardo has dropped off behind Button so not sure whether he's made a mistake somewhere, but there's huge graining on his front left tyre which Red Bull will be concerned about.

Hamilton sets a fastest lap, 1:20.724. By comparison Vettel's last was 1:22.109, Alonso's a 1:22.060.

Lap 45

Rosberg's lead over Bottas now 12.6 seconds. I wonder what it's like leading this sort of race and maintaining 100% concentration.

Vettel now pits so my earlier suspicions he was on a three stop strategy prove to be correct.

Lap 46

Hamilton sets another fastest lap, a 1:20.342 and there's a Toro Rosso on fire at the hairpin. Kvyat hops out as quickly as you can and he kicks the barrier in frustration. Huge, huge fire out the back of his car.

Lap 47

Yellow flags waving as marshals remove that car but I don't think we will get a safety car period.

Lap 48

Ricciardo emerges from his own stop in P8.

I tell you what, Alonso is very much keeping Bottas in his sights, he's only 1.8 seconds off the Finn.

Rosberg told Mercedes is not expecting rain for the rest of the race. His race to lose then.

Lap 49

Hamilton takes a massive two seconds off Alonso as Mercedes tells him his pace is good. He is DRS range of Alonso and he makes easy work of his first F1 team-mate. Alonso likely more worried about his battle with Vettel, who swings by Button further down the road for fifth.

Lap 50

Another fastest lap for Hamilton as Sutil spins coming through the final corner. It looks like he may have stalled the car in a rather awkward position....

Yellow flags as Sutil gets out of the car. They surely can't be contemplating leaving it there? There's double-waved yellows currently.

Looks like Sutil just lost it coming onto the kerb. Hamilton did well to avoid the spinning Sauber and the Brit takes advantage, putting for his second super-soft tyre stint and emerges in between Alonso and Vettel once again.

Lap 51

That Sauber still sitting just left of the racing line down there. There's some marshals there waiting to move this car, so it looks like they will keep the safety car in the pit lane.

Three marshals run across the track and push Sutil's car off the track. For a moment it looked like they couldn't move that car but well done to them, I don't think you could pay me to run across a grand prix track during a race.

Lap 52

Mercedes pitted there expecting a safety car. Hamilton now needs to do 16 laps on these super-soft tyres, rather than 13, and that means I think he will have to settle for third this afternoon.

Lap 53

Hamilton takes three seconds off Alonso on his first lap on those super-soft tyres.

Bottas tells Williams it will not be easy to manage the current soft tyres until the end of the race.

Ricciardo goes up to seventh on the inside of Hulkenberg at the hairpin, the German is not giving up the position easily however and has another look at the next corner, but Ricciardo closes the drive.

Lap 54

Hamilton's last lap a 1:19.908 - a new fastest lap - so he will make short work of Alonso when he catches him, he's taking three seconds off him a lap. Suddenly second looking a little more realistic for Hamilton.

Lap 55

Magnussen and Raikkonen exit the pits for the third time in the race, both emerging ahead of Perez but Raikkonen locks up into Turn 1 and Perez reclaims the position! Perez had stopped one lap earlier so his tyres were up to temperature.

Alonso is now going backwards, his left front is absolutely shot to pieces. Hamilton made light work of him and even Gutierrez unlapped himself there.

Alonso darts into the pits for his third stop. Where will he come out in relation to Vettel and Button? Those two will be fighting until the end now you feel.

Lap 56

Behind them both is the answer, as well as Ricciardo. He's on used super-soft tyres, though, so he will have a bit of a pace advantage over the guys in front of him once those tyres heat up.

Ahead of him Ricciardo beats Button to the apex of Turn 8, lovely move from the Australian as he sells him a dummy on the run down to the corner.

Lap 57

Alonso opens his DRS and he flies past Button down the back straight and into sixth position. Next up for him, Ricciardo.

Hamilton now five seconds behind Bottas in second, he's taking chunks and chunks out of the Williams every lap.

Lap 58

Hamilton told Bottas will be an "easy catch" and reminded he needs to think about getting this tyre to the end of the race. Remember, Bottas' tyres will also be in an absolute state soon as well so the Williams driver is no doubt thinking about holding second.

Lap 59

And yes, there's the confirmation. Williams tells Bottas not to race Hamilton, just to get the tyres to the finish.

Alonso is now right up behind Ricciardo and opens the DRS into the hairpin, gets by, Ricciardo then claims the position back into the hairpin. They have a drag race down to Turn 7 and Alonso gets back in front, but Ricciardo dives down the inside of Turn 8! Superb drive from Ricciardo and Alonso is forced to back off somewhat through the stadium section.

Lap 60

Alonso will have another crack on this lap but what a statement that is from Ricciardo. Fighting to the death.

This time Alonso gets alongside the outside, Ricciardo one again holds firm down the inside. He gets good drive down to Turn 8 but he just can't get close enough to the Red Bull - who then blocks well through the stadium section.

Lap 61

Hamilton now right up behind Bottas. Williams tells Bottas he can use the overtake button.... but also that he needs to consider getting the tyres to the end. That's a good way to confuse a racing driver.

Ricciardo still just in front of Alonso coming out of the hairpin, he's refusing to let the double world champion past.

Lap 62

Hamilton now up against a car which can match the Mercedes down the straight. He has a sniff coming into the hairpin but both of their front tyres looking rather shot - he needs to do this quickly.

Alonso gets past Ricciardo and runs deep, Ricciardo senses an opportunity to pass again but he just holds the Spaniard off. Ricciardo tries it again through Turn 8 and for a moment it looks like he has it but Alonso holds firm on the outside and makes the move stick this time. Super driving from both men.

Hamilton still unable to pass Bottas.

Lap 63

Bottas told he can push a bit harder now. Big moments in this race and in the championship coming up. Hamilton has four laps to get past the Williams, he has slight bit of fuel in reserve over Bottas as well.

Lap 64

Bottas clearly has better traction through the middle sector. Hamilton just can't get close enough but they are approaching some backmarkers. Second could be slipping away for Hamilton.... those super-soft tyres are looking shot.

Lap 65

Those backmarkers means Bottas also gets to use DRS through the hairpin. Hamilton clearly does not have the traction through Turn 2 and 3 to get this pass done at the moment.

Lap 66

"He's too fast on the straight," says Hamilton, but he's reminded Bottas had DRS last time out. He won't this time. Again Hamilton cannot close enough on Bottas, who looks so cool under pressure.

Lap 67

Rosberg starts the final lap of this race.

I don't think Hamilton is going to be close enough to get this pass done. He's got one more bite of the cherry down to Turn 6. He's nowhere near close enough to pass Bottas and he will have to settle for third.

Out in front, Rosberg takes the chequered flag to win his home grand prix. Hamilton finishes 1.7 seconds behind Bottas after backing off in that final sector.

Vettel comes home fifth. Ricciardo still keeping Alonso honest through the final sector but the Spaniard clings on, he claims it by less than a tenth of a second! Great duel in the closing stages between those two.

Bottas congratulated over the radio after "beating a Mercedes fair and square". Nerves of steel at the end from Bottas but that final stint on the super-soft proved to be too long in the end, he just didn't have the traction he needed for the last three or four laps. That contact with Button ultimately costing Hamilton second position, you would think, as it indirectly led to the change of strategy.

Hulkenberg continues his run of scoring points in every race with seventh.

Rosberg laps up the crowd on his lap back to parc ferme. He's in a typically exuberant mood when he gets there, jumping into the arms of Mercedes engineers all around him.

Bottas celebrating a little bit like he's won a race, too. Hamilton's body language decidedly different, he looks sheepish as he gets out of his car but he does shake Rosberg's hand after the weigh-in. Hamilton must know second place slipped through his fingers there.

Plaudits have to go to Bottas though, as Williams said beating a Mercedes is a great achievement and will be a huge lift to the entire team.
