Profile

A prodigiously long hitter even in an era where such players appear to be a-dime-a-dozen, Gary Woodland is an interesting prospect in American golf.

A relatively late bloomer having dedicated his childhood sporting career towards basketball - he received a scholarship to play the game at college, before transferring to focus on golf - Woodland's athleticism is evident in his powerful swing, although he needs to add some finesse to his short game and putting if he is to become a consistent, top-20 ranked player.

Having won his first PGA Tour event at the Transitions Championship in 2011, he then missed out on the Bob Hope Classic in a playoff before winning the World Cup of Golf alongside Matt Kuchar - who handpicked him as his partner, a sign of his growing status on the professional circuit.

Deciding to work with a new coach, Butch Harmon, over the winter, it is clear Woodland has big - well, major - ambitions for his continuing career. It remains to be seen whether he can achieve them, but all the raw ingredients appear to be in place.

Career high: Holing a nervy par putt to win the Transitions Championship by one shot from Webb Simpson in March 2011.
