Tiger Woods will return to competitive golf at next week's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

The 14-time major champion, now outside the top 20 in golf's world rankings, has not teed it up in a professional event since the Players Championship in May, where he lasted just nine holes before aggravating a complicated knee injury. That knee problem was first picked up at The Masters in April, a setback that forced him to withdraw from the Sawgrass event.

After that experience the 35-year-old had pledged to be extra cautious with his latest rehabilitation, and it now appears he is finally ready to return to action at Firestone Country Club in Ohio, for one of the more prestigious events on the calendar.

"Feeling fit and ready to tee it up at Firestone next week," Tiger said on Twitter. "Excited to get back out there!"

Woods has played in 26 tournaments since his last victory, at the 2009 Australian Open, but will make his comeback on one of his most successful hunting grounds. Woods has won the Firestone event seven times during his career, with his last victory coming two years ago.

The American was also in the news last week, after he sacked his long-term caddie Steve Williams. However, he has not yet announced who will carry his bag in Akron next week.

Woods has played in six PGA tournaments this year, posting two top 10 finishes and making the cut on five occasions. The closest he has come to victory in the past year was at 2010's Chevron World Challenge, where he was pipped to victory by Graeme McDowell.
