Europe pair Catriona Matthew and Azahara Munoz won the last hole to take a half against Paula Creamer and Cristie Kerr to ensure Europe won the Saturday morning foursomes 2½-1½ to take a two point lead into fourballs at the Solheim Cup.

Europe captain Alison Nicholas sent out Caroline Hedwall and Sophie Gustafson first and was rewarded as her lead pair crushed Angela Stanford and Stacy Lewis 6&5. The European duo took the opening hole with a par and it set the tone for the day as they lost just one hole in the contest.

Morgan Pressel and Ryann O'Toole are two of the brightest prospects in US golf and they demonstrated their class with a 3&2 win over Karen Stupples and Christel Boeljon. Veteran US star Juli Inkster looked out of sorts as she and Brittany Lang were toppled 3&2 by Maria Hjorth and Anna Nordqvist.

The final contest of the morning session proved the most intriguing as Matthew and Munoz demonstrated tremendous resolve to claim a half against US stars Kerr and Creamer.

The match looked like swinging USA's way when Kerr produced a moment of brilliance on the 13th, when she holed a stunning long-range, swinging birdie putt to move ahead. The European duo drew level with a brilliant birdie courtesy of the blade of Munoz on 16, but Creamer steeled herself to fire a stunning iron approach on 17 to eight feet - which Kerr gobbled up to prompt a second hip-bump celebration.

But the drama was not done. Kerr erred on the 18th, as an adrenaline rush saw her send her approach into the back bunker. Creamer splashed out to eight feet but Kerr's putt for the match slid by and Munoz stepped up and rammed her four-footer into the back of the cup to claim an unlikely half and with it a 7-5 lead.
