Adam Scott has thrown down the gauntlet to Europe's elite by insisting he has his sights set on becoming world No. 1.

Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer currently lock down the top four places in the world rankings, but world No. 8 Scott feels he is playing well enough to bridge the gap.

"I'm not that far away," Scott said ahead of the Australian Open, which is live on ESPN in the UK. "I know Luke has a pretty good lead on No. 2 even at the moment but I'm sitting at No. 8 and with consistent play over the next year I believe No. 1 is certainly attainable.

"I think it's the first time in my career as a professional that it's been realistic for me. For the first seven, eight, nine years no one played at the level Tiger (Woods) played at for that period of time to be able to be No. 1.

"He's slightly off but he's on his way back it seems, so it's a good time for me to take advantage of that and hopefully beat him to the punch."
