On the course: Tiger back in the hunt for titles

Greg Chalmers won his first Australian Open in 13 years with victory at The Lakes Golf Course in Sydney on Sunday.

Chalmers secured an eighth career win playing a steady round of 69 to wind up 13-under the card for the tournament. The Australian has only made two cuts at majors in the past decade, but made the most of a brilliant start on the final day in which he birdied the opening two holes.

Tiger Woods finished third, two strokes behind Chalmers, after firing a five-under 67 on the final day. The 14-time major winner played some breathtaking iron shots before falling short as he attempted to make up a six-shot deficit in the last round.

Woods became the first player since Friday to birdie the third hole as he charged up the leaderboard early on. Indeed, Woods birdied three holes on the front nine before a wayward drive at the par-five eleventh halted his charge.

An audacious chip to eagle the 14th was then matched by his approach to the 17th green which set up a birdie to take Woods within a stroke of the lead. However, it was not to be, as the American was forced to settle one stroke behind overnight leader John Senden, who was unable to maintain his day-three form, dropping four shots on the front nine.

Jason Day recovered from a bogey on the first to share the lead with Ogilvy for much of the last round. But missing the greens on the 11th, 13th and 15th cost the US Open runner-up as he finished tied for fourth at nine-under.

Adam Scott shot an impressive four-under to take a share of fourth alongside Geoff Ogilvy who shot the round of the day with a 65. American hope Nick Watney was another to end the tournament on nine-under, as was Nick O'Hern.
