After a composed final-day performance, Rhys Davies claimed his maiden European Tour title at the Trophee Hassan II in Morocco.

Starting the day in second place, Davies secured the triumph after a final round 66, which left him 25-under for the tournament. With all four of his rounds completed in the 60s, it was a deserved victory for the Welshman.

After a back-and-forth tussle at the top of the leaderboard on the final day, Davies finished with a two-stroke lead over Louis van Oosthuizen.

Davies looked as if the task of overhauling overnight leader van Oosthuizen was out of his reach early in his round, bogeying the second hole for the second successive day.

That disappointment only served to galvanise Davies, however, as a remarkable run of seven birdies in ten holes in the mid-section of his round took him beyond van Oosthuizen and to eventual victory. He needed just 24 putts across the final 18 holes, and the Welshman was delighted with his final-day composure.

"I'm a little bit lost at the moment - this is all completely surreal to me," Davies said. "It's all a bit of a blur. I just kept focusing on hitting the ball as close to the flag as I could and holing every putt and I nearly did just about that.

"I just felt like I could make every putt and I think that was the key. I had a good speed on the greens and when you have a good speed you hole a lot of putts. I had good control of my swing today. It was probably the best I've hit it all week."

After reaching the turn in a two-under 34, van Oosthuizen succumbed to two bogeys on the back nine as his title challenge petered out at the crucial juncture. Five strokes back, Thomas Levet, Mikko Ilonen, Ignacio Garrido and Thomas Aiken tied for third.

Danny Willett was the joint highest-placed Englishman, finishing seventh at 16-under alongside Robert Rock.
