Tiger Woods failed to decisively answer questions about his form and fitness as he endured a turbulent day at the Tavistock Cup on Tuesday.

Woods, who is making his return to action following an Achilles problem, did not look affected by the injury - but his play was erratic, which may arouse suspicions over his condition.

At the end of his round he smiled broadly and embraced his playing partners, despite a host of swings that lacked fluency - particularly off the tee.

The former world No. 1 played the front nine in two under following a brace of early birdies, but never gathered any momentum after the turn - and ended up signing for a level-par round.

Woods is now poised to play on consecutive days from Wednesday to Sunday, beginning with the pro-am at the Alfred Dunhill Invitational and continuing into the tournament proper, which he has won on several occasions in the past.

It is all part of his preparations for the Masters, the year's first major which begins in just over two weeks, but it will also take its strain on his fragile body.

The Tavistock Cup was won by Lake Nona on home turf, with the team triumphing by two shots from Isleworth.

In the singles strokeplay format, five players posted rounds of five under: Robert Allenby, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Ross Fisher and Thomas Bjorn.

Graeme McDowell and Tom Lewis were both three under, with Justin Rose two under and Ian Poulter a disappointing four over.
