Casey forced to withdraw from US Open

Paul Casey will not compete in the US Open after the Englishman succumbed to an ongoing shoulder injury.

Casey suffered a shoulder dislocation while snowboarding on Christmas Eve and his game has not recovered since. The 34-year-old withdrew after nine holes of the Players Championship in Florida, and also pulled out of the World Match Play in Spain, before missing the cut in his last tournament at The PGA Championship three weeks ago.

"You're always disappointed to miss time due to injury, but it's especially true when you have to withdraw from the US Open," Casey said. "I've been trying to play my way back and I feel like I probably came back too soon originally.

"It's affecting my ability right now to be ready for the test of a major. I do feel like I'm very nearly ready, but not quite ready for this week."

China-born, Florida-based prodigy Andy Zhang will replace Casey in San Francisco, and at 14 will become the youngest player in the tournament since the second world war.

Meanwhile, Casey is hoping to return at the International Open in Cologne next week.

"I so want to play and it's so frustrating," Casey said. "I've got to get my brain to trust that I can't hurt it any more. It's amazing how the brain controls the body almost involuntarily."
