Ian Poulter made a bright start to the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, defying breezy conditions to card an opening round 71 in Hawaii.

Poulter, the only Englishman in the 30-man field at Kapalua, produced a bogey-free back nine to move up the leaderboard and sit two shots off the pace.

After heavy winds cause havoc for the opening three days at the Plantation Course, the first round was finally completed at the fourth attempt on Monday, with Mark Wilson. Nick Watney and Dustin Johnson leading the way on four-under after 18 holes.

Organisers are hoping the weather will allow 36 holes on Monday before wrapping up the 54-hole event on Tuesday.

Bubba Watson and Brandt Snedeker are in a five-strong group a shot back on three-under, while defending champion Steve Stricker went round in 71.

Stricker sits alongside Poulter on two-under, level with Keegan Bradley, who served up a mixed round of six birdies and four bogeys.
