Luke Donald showed he only needs one day's warm up before hitting his stride as he jumped up the leaderboard at the Northern Trust Open in California.

Donald improved on Thursday's first round by three shots to card a five-under 66.

He showed off his impressive short game in the process and at the 10th played a delicate bunker shot to make an easy birdie.

South Korean Sang-moon Bae shot one better than Donald on Thursday and was one better than him again on Friday to take the overall lead at nine-under - alongside Fredrik Jacobson who carded a 65 on Friday.

Webb Simpson improved dramatically in his second round and shot a 66 to help him move into the top 10 while Sergio Garcia crumbled late on and had to card a two-over 73.

Adam Scott, Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson joined Garcia on four-under following rounds of 67, 68 and 67 respectively.
