Three-time major winner Padraig Harrington has confirmed he will play in the Celtic Manor Wales Open next month.

Harrington joins Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell and Oliver Wilson in changing his schedule to include the event which starts on June 3 and is keen to improve on his only previous appearance in 2008 when he missed the cut. The 38-year-old, who has been a member of the European team at the last five Ryder Cups, is also focused on getting another look at the Twenty Ten Course ahead of his possible inclusion in Colin Montgomerie's side for this year's event.

"I quite like the course at Celtic Manor, it's an interesting course and it's a golf course I think I can do well on," Harrington said. "I didn't have a good run the last time I played it but I wouldn't mind having another crack at that one."

After an up and down start to the season, Harrington is determined to be part of Montgomerie's plans and believes playing in the £1.8m tournament will give Ryder Cup hopefuls in the field an advantage ahead of facing the Americans in October.

"I want to make every effort to keep Colin happy. Obviously I'm trying to make sure I qualify for the team.

"I want to be part of that team and being part of that team means throughout the year you've got to make your effort and gel with your team-mates."
