Colin Montgomerie will not feature at The Open after the former Ryder Cup captain hit a second round 76 to finish three-over-par and rule himself out of contention at Local Final Qualifying at Gullane No. 1.

'Monty' was as low as five-under after 12 holes during his Tuesday morning first round, but difficult conditions after the turn saw him card four bogeys in five holes before making birdie at the last.

However, a further four bogeys plus a double-bogey six during his afternoon round ended any hopes of the Scot adding his name to the list at Muirfield.

  • The Open Championship will tee-off on July 18 and ESPN will have all the news, views and features from Muirfield - along with an in-depth GolfCast from all four rounds.

"I got to five under and threw it away - never mind," Montgomerie said. "It's not my schedule. I just played badly this afternoon. I didn't get going at all.

"The pace of play was shocking but that's not the reason I played badly. It's very disappointing after being five under."

Two amateurs made up two of three qualifiers at Gullane - Ben Stow and Matthew Fitzpatrick join Sweden's Oscar Floren at the July 14 major.

Elsewhere, Grant Forrest, Shiv Kapur and John Wade were the successful trio at Dunbar in Scotland. Amateur Forrest hit rounds of 67 and 65 to finish eight-under while Australia's Wade scored a remarkable second round 63 to finish seven-under for his spot.

Jimmy Mullen, Gareth Wright and George Murray were the three qualifiers at North Berwick while Steven Tiley, Lloyd Saltman and Tyrell Hatton all booked their places by finishing top three at The Musselburgh.
