Rory McIlroy has trained his sights on taking down Tiger Woods at the Ryder Cup, but has no regrets about snubbing the chance to play at Celtic Manor next month.

The Ulsterman feels he is just "a few decent finishes" from securing his place in Colin Montgomerie's side, having clinched a thrilling win in the Quail Hollow Championship a fortnight ago.

McIlroy has spent much of this season on the PGA Tour and he will play the Memorial Tournament as opposed to the Wales Open - which will be held at the Ryder Cup venue of Celtic Manor.

Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie had spoken of his desire to see the cream of the European crop play at Celtic Manor, only to soften his stance, but McIlroy feels he has enough knowledge of the course.

"I can't wait for the Ryder Cup," McIlroy said. "I'm probably a few decent wins away from making the team; it's going to be fantastic.

"I played it in 2008 so I know the course. I have played it about six times so I know what to expect."

There has been no indication as to whether Woods will be in the American team, but McIlroy has thrown the gauntlet down to the world No. 1.

"You'd have to say Tiger looks more vulnerable at the moment than he ever has in his career - which is understandable considering what he's been through," the 21-year-old said.

"I don't know what frame of mind he will be in for the Ryder Cup. But I'd love to play him in the singles, even if he's back to his best - especially if that's the case. Play the best, beat the best, be the best - that is the natural progression in any walk of life."
