Pelle Edberg shot 23 places up the leaderboard to build a one-shot lead after a rain-affected second day of action at the Mallorca Open.

The Swede, who has only one top-ten finish to his name this season, carded a 64 to initially move level with first-round leader James Kingston on five-under overall. Kingston then belatedly commenced his second round following a bout of poor weather and, after a string of three bogeys, eventually recovered to drop just a single shot in order to sit on four-under.

Edberg, who lost his Tour card at the end of last season, had a chance to impress in Mallorca with many big names taking a rest week. He seized the opportunity, showing a lovely touch around the greens to produce a seven-birdie performance on a course that rewards those with an accomplished short game.

His closest threat for a while appeared to be Stuart Manley of Wales, who was set to produce a three-under round of 67 to move ahead of Kingston - who was suffering his mid-round dip. However, having carded four birdies and just the solitary bogey, Manley bogeyed the final hole to drop to two-under ahead of the weekend.

Kingston's day began to unravel after the turn as he entered into trouble at the 11th hole, carding his second bogey of the day. Further problems followed at 12 and 15, but he managed to claw his way back to a one-over 71 in order to sit one stroke adrift of Edberg.

Alejandro Canizares, son of former Ryder Cup player Jose Maria, recovered from a double-bogey on the first hole to shoot a level-par 70. The 2006 Russian Open winner, who is searching for his second title, ended his day three shots off the pace alongside Manley.

Before play was suspended for two hours due to lightning, Andrew Marshall moved into a tie for fifth at one-under. It was a steady round for the Englishman - two birdies, one bogey - as he took advantage of the milder conditions at the start of the day.
