Ian Poulter has insisted there is no animosity between himself and Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie.

The pair became embroiled in a verbal spat towards the end of 2009, when Montgomerie launched a scathing attack on Poulter for opting not to play in the PGA Championship at Wentworth. The Scot's temperature rose again when Poulter rejected the chance to to play for GB and Ireland against Continental Europe in the Vivendi Seve Trophy.

The supposed spat was seized on by the media, with it being suggested that Poulter would have to earn his place in the Ryder Cup on the course rather than via a captain's pick. However, Poulter has insisted there is no tension between the two and claimed it is media mischief-making.

"I don't have a problem and nor does Colin with me," Poulter said. "It has only ever been a problem in the papers, we get on fine, so somebody is making an issue when there is no issue.

"Colin wants to win this Ryder Cup as much as anyone and he will pick the best players that are playing at the time. I know that and pretty much everyone knows that."
