United States Ryder Cup star Anthony Kim has been ruled out of next week's Open.

Kim has not played since undergoing surgery on his thumb in May and with the world No.11 still working on his rehabilitation, he has taken the decision to sidestep the third major of the year.

The 25-year-old's priority is to return to fitness and form ahead of the Ryder Cup, with Kim reportedly still three weeks away from being able to compete again.

Former US PGA champion David Toms has also been ruled out after failing to shake off a shoulder complaint that has been plaguing him for some time.

Kim and Toms' loss is the gain of Ricky Barnes and Davis Love III who have been handed places in next week's field at St Andrews.

First reserve is Jason Day, one place ahead of England's Brian Davis.
