Justin Rose has put his birthday celebrations on hold in a bid to guarantee himself a place on the European Ryder Cup team.

Rose, who turns 30 on Friday, has decided to compete at the Irish Open on Thursday rather than take a break in Ibiza.

As it stands, Rose will miss out on an automatic place in Colin Montgomerie's 12-man team because he is seventh on the World points list. Only the top four will qualify, plus the top five on the European points list not otherwise qualified from the world points list.

Montgomerie will then select three captain's picks to make up the remainder of his team and Rose, who won his first PGA Tour event at the Memorial in June and grabbed his second a month later at the AT&T, is determined not to have to rely on a wild card.

"Getting back on to the Ryder Cup team after making my debut two years ago is a big target and I want it nailed down as quickly as possible," he said in The Sun.

The Ryder Cup takes place at Celtic Manor in October with the European Team looking to regain the trophy they lost at Valhalla two years ago.
