Rhys Davies has put his chances of playing in the Ryder Cup in the hands of Colin Montgomerie after pulling out of the Czech open.

The Welshman has withdrawn from this week's event because of fatigue, but his decision means he cannot qualify automatically for a place on the team - he must now hope Montgomerie, the European captain, makes him a wildcard pick.

Davies, who finished as runner-up to Graeme McDowell in the Wales Open at Celtic Manor in June, has chances to climb into the top nine but the European tour rookie insists he is right to be taking a break.

"I said at the start of the week I would listen to my body and my body is telling me to take a rest," he said. "Important though the Ryder Cup is, to me it's not the goal, winning tournaments is."

The 25-year-old looked short on endurance as he finished a lowly 62nd at the US PGA Championship and Davies admits his form is suffering as a result of over-playing.

"It's been a hectic schedule and it's probably catching up with me. I played well for 52 holes and was four under, but then I finished in a train wreck."

It remains to be seen whether Davies will play at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles next week - an event he has entered to play in.
