Ryder Cup not on my mind - Davies

Madrid Masters runner-up Rhys Davies has played down talk of him forcing his way into the European Ryder Cup team ahead of this week's Wales Open at Celtic Manor.

The European Tour rookie has recorded a win, two runners-up finishes and a third place since bursting onto the scene back in March and could move up to seventh in the European Ryder Cup points list if he comes out on top at his home event this week.

Europe captain Colin Montgomerie is known to be keen on the idea of a Welsh player being part of his team but Davies is adamant that the prospect of him teeing it up against the Unites States in October is far from his mind as he aims at winning his second professional title.

"I don't think about it (the Ryder Cup)," Davies said. "I just clearly think about each tournament week-by-week and I'm getting quite good at staying in the present and chasing only one thing at a time.

"My focus is on trying to win this week and just giving myself a chance to compete on the final day. I'm playing well and have enjoyed some good results which has obviously boosted my confidence.

"Perhaps it is important to have a home player involved in the Ryder Cup but I also know that Monty will pick the best team and rightly so. It is a fantastic opportunity for every player in Europe and I know every player will be trying hard to get on the team. The best team will definitely be here in October."

The last shot played by a Welsh golfer in the Ryder Cup was Phillip Price's winning putt against Phil Mickelson at The Belfry in 2002 and Price is convinced that the 25-year-old has the qualities needed to break into team.

"I think people are probably beginning to realise he's the best putter in the world," Price said. "I love what he's doing, so I probably wouldn't advise him to do anything differently."
