Colin Montgomerie insists he was 'delighted' to hear the news that Tiger Woods will form part of the US Ryder Cup team at Celtic Manor in October.

US captain Corey Pavin named Woods among his four wild-card picks on Tuesday, alongside Stewart Cink, Zach Johnson and Rickie Fowler. The news confirms what Montgomerie will have already suspected, with his European side tasked with the challenge of beating a team boasting the world's No. 1.

Woods has a losing record in Ryder Cups, and he was not present when his US colleagues took the trophy two years ago, but Montgomerie is adamant the competition would have been a lesser tournament without him.

"Corey has used his four captain's picks to good effect as I knew he would," said Montgomerie. "I am glad we now know the 12 men we will face at Celtic Manor.

"Like my European team, the American side has an excellent blend of youthful talent and I am delighted to see Tiger Woods amongst Corey's selections - the Ryder Cup is a better event with him in it.

"I wish the American team safe travels and we all look forward to welcoming them to Wales."
