Embattled world number one Tiger Woods has found an ally in the form of Nike chairman Phil Knight.

Woods has lost a number of lucrative endorsements after he was exposed as having cheated on his wife with a string of women.

The 33-year-old has confirmed he will take an indefinite break from the game, but he will still have the support of sporting giant Nike. Knight claims there is always a risk in entering agreements with individuals and feels Woods has been positive for the company.

"I think he's been really great," Knight said. "When his career is over, you'll look back on these indiscretions as a minor blip, but the media is making a big deal out of it right now."

Other sponsors have distanced themselves from Woods. Technology outsourcing and consulting firm Accenture Plc ended its endorsement deal with Woods, Gillette said it would limit the use of Woods in its marketing and AT&T Inc has said it is evaluating its relationship.
