Lee Westwood admitted there was room for improvement but insisted he was satisfied with his second round 70 at the WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai.

Two late birdies saw Westwood move to eight-under, a shot behind leader Francesco Molinari and four strokes clear of Tiger Woods. Victory at the Sheshan International Golf Course would cement Westwood's new status as world No. 1, but he admitted he needed to cut out the errors.

"I putted fairly nicely, not as well as yesterday but all in all I am pretty pleased with a 70," Westwood told Sky Sports. "You have to position it well and the firmer the greens get and tougher the pin placements are, the harder it is.

"I made a mistake at the last. Billy [Foster, caddie] said to lay up and leave a sand iron in there. I went with a five wood and hit it to where I thought was a good spot, but they had pushed the flag up against the slope and I had a tough shot. It would have been easier to go in with a full sand iron. They are the kind of mistakes you don't need to make and that is why it was tricky out there."
