Lee Westwood has welcomed the decision to award the 2018 Ryder Cup to France.

France, Germany, Spain, Portugal and Netherlands delivered bids that were praised by the European Tour, but it was Le Golf National on the outskirts of Paris that was awarded the right to host the event.

The course is an established venue on the European Tour, playing host to the French Open, and it is a favourite among the players.

"France has been very supportive of the tour over the past few years," World No. 1 Westwood told Sky Sports News. "The French Open is always a well attended event around a great golf course.

"The Paris National has got to have one of the toughest finishes that we play on tour all year. There is a lot of water so you could see a lot of drama there when the Ryder Cup comes to town.

"The facilities are good. There is a lot of room and the venue is very near Paris so hotels aren't a problem and France has had a good history and there are a lot more world-class players around now, so I was pleased to see it."
