Woods absence from Open is a blow - R&A

The Royal & Ancient Club has admitted that Tiger Woods' absence from next week's Open Championship at Royal St George's will be a blow to the event.
Woods was forced to confirm his withdrawal from the third major of the year on Tuesday, as his recovery from two serious injuries to his left leg continues to take longer than expected.
The 35-year-old reportedly rang the chief executive of the R&A, Peter Dawson, personally to express his regret at being unable to tee it up in Kent, as he attempts to ensure there are no further setbacks as he looks to get fully fit.
Dawson confirmed it was 'disappointing' that the 14-time major champion would be unable to play in this year's edition of an event he has won three times during in his career, but wished him the best in his ongoing rehabilitation.
"I know how disappointed Tiger is not to be able to play in the Open this year," said Dawson. "Naturally, we are sorry that a player of his calibre isn't able to join us at Royal St George's, but we wish him well in his recovery and hope to see him back soon, competing in front of the fans that love to see him play the game."
Australian Brendan Jones was due to take Woods' place in the field, but is also unavailable as his wife is expecting a baby next week. As a result, the spot instead goes to American Jason Dufner.
"Looks like I am getting in the Open Championship, I am excited!" Dufner said on Twitter. "Thanks to all my followers for the support on getting into the Open. Should be a great test."
