Qualifying

Welcome back to ESPNF1's live coverage of the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend. Qualifying is up next and we should be set for another tense and interesting session with McLaren, Red Bull, Ferrari and Lotus all in the mix.

Mark Webber was fastest in final practice by just 0.093s, but as always the teams and drivers would have been holding something back for qualifying. Alonso and the Lotuses were a little further adrift, but the top ten is very tight so anything could happen through the knock-out sessions. We'll also be keeping an eye out for Bruno Senna, who was third fastest on Friday and fourth fastest today. He's in need of a good weekend and looks as though he has the pace to impress at the Hungaroring.

One of the drivers who didn't look as comfortable in FP3 was Jenson Button. He appeared to be struggling for front-end grip again and was 10th at the end of the session, but after his progress in Germany it would be a brave person who bets against him.

Martin asks the big question ahead of this session: "Who do you think will get pole? Do you think it's possible alonso will get another pole?"

I don't think Ferrari look quite as competitive as they have been at recent races. Remember, Alonso's last two poles have come in the wet and we look set for a hot and dry session this afternoon. But he will be up there. I have a feeling that Hamilton has been building up to a good result this weekend and he definitely has the pace. So my (imaginary) money is on him.

There have been some rumours this morning that Red Bull has a way of changing the ride height between qualifying and the race. Christian Horner tells Sky Sports that it's the first he's heard of it, and it's not like they haven't had similar accusations thrown at them before.

Ferrari's latest weather update: "Less than ten minutes to the start of Q1. The weather remained sunny and hot, as expected."

There is still a chance of rain in the race, most likely a late-race shower at around 3pm. But we'll have to wait until race day for a more accurate forecast.

Track temperature is up at 45C. That's very hot and should suit the likes of Lotus. How about Kimi Raikkonen for an outside shot at pole? He was 0.4s off the top in FP3 and hasn't qualified higher than fourth this season, but I do feel Lotus has been improving its qualifying pace at recent races.

Qualifying is under way but no one is that keen to hit the track first.

Grosjean breaks the silence as he exits the pits in his Lotus with an empty track ahead of him. He's on medium tyres to start with. Most the frontrunners will hope to make Q2 without using the softs but inevitably as the times drop they will want to make sure they don't get caught out.

The HRTs and the Marussias are straight out on soft tyres, but are likely to be knocked out in this session anyway. Everybody else is on mediums.

Grosjean radios his team to say the brake balance is "completely wrong". He's told to go two clicks forward on his cockpit dial.

Grosjean clocks a 1:27.333 but that is a long way off the pace he'll need to make Q2.

Raikkonen shows what the car is capable of with a 1:23.273.

Button and Hamilton are on track. It'll be worth keeping an eye on Button to see if he's struggling. If he has to take the soft tyre to make the cut then it's not a good sign. He's on mediums at the moment.

Alonso is on a quick lap but gets baulked by a Marussia. That won't help his lap time ... he goes fifth fastest.

Raikkonen improves again with a 1:22.689 on mediums.

Massa complains of traffic and appears to be blaming Schumacher. Traffic is often a problem round here as it is a short lap and quite tight with just one proper straight.

Raikkonen has a 0.5s buffer to the rest of the field at the moment so will be feeling confident about making Q2 without using a set of softs.

But Hamilton is also looking good and goes fastest with a 1:22.371

Vettel is in need of a better lap after slow second and third sectors sees him stay 18th. Plenty of time to improve but he has been out on his mediums for six laps now.

Senna is currently second and showing good pace again. He's on mediums too.

Vettel gets up to sixth with his latest effort. He must have hit traffic on those previous laps.

It looks like Massa was a little blocked by Schumacher at one stage but we haven't heard anything further from the stewards. It did look as if the Mercedes made some attempt to get out of the way.

Hamilton improves again on the mediums with a 1:21.794.

Vergne puts the frighteners on the cars from fifth down as he goes fourth on a set of softs. He usually drops out in Q1 so the other drivers need to up their game or switch to soft.

Schumacher, Rosberg, Hulkenberg , Alonso, Perez, Kobayashi and di Resta aren't taking any risks as they go out on soft tyres.

Button has also had to use a set of softs, as does Senna in second.

Vettel and Webber also go out on softs. Only Hamilton looks as though he's going to stay in the garage. The Lotuses are on track but are persevering with mediums.

Ricciardo is back in the pits so he is the man to beat.

Kobayashi currently in the drop zone but should get two more attempts on his soft tyres.

Perez is looking very quick in the middle sector and should be safe

Kobayashi has had a bad first sector in traffic but will get one more go.

The Sauber starts his final lap. It's a straight fight between him and Ricciardo. The Toro Rosso is in the pits so it's all down to Kobayashi.

Looks like Kobayashi will do it.

Looks like Kobayashi will do it.

The Sauber goes 15th, but that's enough. He's through and Ricciardo drops out with the Caterhams, Marussias and HRTs.

To confirm, Ricciardo, Kovalainen, Petrov, Pic, Glock, de la Rosa and Karthikeyan will make up the back of the grid. They all set times within 107% of Hamilton's best.

From what we could see Hamilton, Grosjean and Raikkonen were the only drivers not to use a set of softs in that session. It says a lot about those drivers' confidence this weekend.

Button did use a set of softs, as did the two Red Bulls.

The track is open for Q2 and Schumacher is the first man on track

Twelve cars on track now. Webber, Hamilton, Raikkonen, Vergne, Maldonado are biding their time

All drivers are going for soft tyres in this session. No surprise there as it should be a very tight fight for a place in the top ten.

Hulkenberg lays down a benchmark with a 1:21.906, but we've seen faster times than that this weekend

Button improves with a 1:21.880 to go fastest overall.

The Force Indias, Mercedes, Saubers, Vergne and Williams are the most likely to be knocked out in this session.

Raikkonen and Grosjean looking quick with Kimi fastest on a 1:21.614.

Hamilton is now on a flyer with a fastest first sector ... and a fastest second sector ... and goes 0.6s clear at the top with a 1:21.060. Impressive stuff.

Webber has split the Lotuses with a 1:21.844

Hamilton says he got held up despite being comfortably fastest. So presumably he could have dipped into the 1:20s

Everybody from Webber back will be a bit worried about their times and will likely have another shot at setting a better time.

The Mercedes duo look like they're struggling a bit. Vergne is holding his own, albeit unlikely to make the top ten.

Alonso is on a much quicker lap now ... and pops up in third behind Massa. He should be safe.

John asks: "What is the tyre that lewis using in his Q2 first run!"

All drivers are using softs now.

Button goes fifth. Webbe looking a little under pressure as Vettel looks safe in second.

Grosjean is also struggling a bit here as he drops to tenth.

Maldonado is now third fastest and Grosjean improves.

Webber is on the brink of dropping out ...

And Senna does drop the Red Bull out in Q2 as he just gets through by 0.040s. Webber will be very frustrated with that. He just couldn't improve on his last run and it cost him dearly.

So, Webber, di Resta, Rosberg, Perez, Kobayashi, Vergne and Schumacher all drop out.

Schumacher was confronted by a cloud of dust on his final lap as Maldonado ran a bit wide in front of him coming out of turn seven. But 17th place isn't really good enough for the Mercedes driver, 0.4s off Vergne.

As predicted, it was extremely tight to get through to Q3 with less than 0.15s separating Raikkonen in fifth and Webber in 11th.

Hamilton is in a league of his own at the moment and it looks like pole position is his to lose.

Webber says he needs rain to get a good result tomorrow and said he was happy with his car in FP3 but not so much in qualifying.

Hulkenberg is the first man out on track and has opted for medium tyres, possibly to set a sector time and then return to the pits. That would allow his to start on the mediums without setting a time and be ahead of anybody else trying a similar strategy.

Soft tyres for Button, Hamilton, Raikkonen and the Williamses.

Hamilton loses the rear slightly as he attacks the first corner of his first flying lap. But he looks very quick through the rest of the first sector.

Button has backed off on his first lap so don't pay attention to the lap.

Hamilton runs a little wide and sets a 1:26.781 but that must have been a warm-up lap.

Raikkonen lays a benchmark time with a 1:22.717 but it won't be good enough for pole.

Hamilton clocks a 1:21.260 on his first proper attempt.

Grosjean is second on a 1:21.763. Button third with a 1:22.429.

It looks like Hulkenberg, Maldonado and Senna will not set times in order to save tyres.

Vettel is now on track for what will be his one and only run. Remember he used an extra set of softs to make it through Q1.

Vettel's first corner is a bit messy ... his first sector is okay but not spectacular.

Turns out I was wrong about the Force India and Williamses. They're all back on track.

Vettel second fastest on a 1:21.416 after setting the fastest middle sector.

Senna runs very wide after a big lock up into turn one.

Maldonado runs a little wide coming out of the chicane as Hamilton and Vettel get well out of his way.

Maldonado goes fourth with that effort as Vettel returns to the pits. That's the end of the RBR's session.

Alonso goes fourth with his fast lap, Massa fifth.

Button goes third behind Vettel.

Hamilton improves again but Grosjean is up to second with a great final lap. He was still roughly 0.4s off but a good effort by the Lotus driver nonetheless.

Raikkonen disappoints with the fifth fastest time. Alonso ended up being dropped to sixth, he just was nearly a second off Hamilton.

Three different cars in the front three places for tomorrow's race. Vettel somehow salvaged a decent performance from what has been a tricky weekend in practice. Grosjean does well to put his car on the front row - the first time a Lotus has been that high up this year.

But Hamilton was without a doubt the driver of the day. It never really looked in doubt, but he still had to deliver and in the end he set a 1:20.953, 0.413s faster than Grosjean.
