Free practice 3

Good morning from Korea and welcome to the final practice session ahead of today's qualifying. It's slightly overcast this morning but no sign of rain just yet. We should get a solid hour of practice in.

This is a very important session for the drivers as they will now be focusing on set-up. The track was a little slippery yesterday but it's now at a stage when the drivers feel they can push and put trust in the set-up tweaks they make with qualifying in mind.

Lots of empty grandstands again this morning but hopefully we'll see those fill out as the day progresses.

The session is under way.

12 cars are already out on track, getting an early installation lap in.

Once again the opening laps look fairly tentative as the drivers find where the grip is on this 5km track. There are also some reports of bumps in the braking areas after yesterday's running. The force of 24 F1 cars braking hard has started to take its toll on the surface. But there are no concerns about the track breaking up.

A new dollop of concrete has been laid on the apex of turn 16 to stop drivers cutting it and bottoming out.

There is still a lot of dust in the pit lane though, and the tyres are covered in it as they return to the garages. So pit stops could be interesting this weekend.

Vettel is the only driver not to complete an installation lap. He's sat in his cockpit, just waiting for the OK to go out.

Alonso is now sat at the back of his garage, explaining teh layout of the track to his engineers.

Vettel is now out on track. He's the only driver out at the moment.

Despite numerous positive reports of grip levels, Lotus is not impressed by the track condition: "Initial reports from both Jarno and Heikki are that track is no better than yesterday, possibly worse in places"

Virgin's prediction for this session: "Lap times will be slightly slower than yesterday because of the changes at turn 16 and it's colder..."

The air temperature is 19C, about four or five degrees down on this time yesterday. Alonso is walking down to the FIA scales to get an official weighing.

Nobody wants to head out because the track is pretty dusty so we are back to the familiar chicken and egg scenario on a Saturday morning.

Alguersuari has had enough of waiting around and has taken to the circuit.

Tom says: "The only thing the newer regulations have done is make everything except Qualifying and the race worth watching. When engines were plentiful and tire wars were on and testing was legal, you could see lots of acion when the green light came on. Now what??? The show is not for the spectators, it is for the engineers and the areo people. Where's the Show?"

I remember the days when nothing would happen in qualifying for the first 30 minutes. Having said that, I would like to see a tyre war, engine restrictions are a bit of a pain but do reduce costs slightly.

Alguersuari clocks a 1:45.671, as we know from yesterday's times that can be easily beaten.

Sutil is the first man to have a spin this morning. He ran wide in sector two and then brought a whole load of dust and dirt back onto the track.

An update from Renault and Kubica: "Robert says that the track is quite slippery this morning."

Buemi is currently fastest with a 1:42.993.

Alguersuari complains of oversteer and his team just tells him to keep pushing. Not the most useful advice but it is true that the track should improve as the session wears on.

Kovalainen just clobbered the final corner apex. There is a big lump of concrete there to stop the drivers doing that and a few sparks flew from the underside of his Lotus.

Alonso, Hamilton and Massa are out on track.

Hamilton backs off towards the end of the lap to find some space on the circuit before attacking the final two corners. He is on a six-lap run.

Alonso pumps in the first decent time with a 1:40.795. Hamilton's time is only good enough for ninth.

Sutil says: "That wasn't a tidy run. It was too early to be out there as the grip was too poor. Very low traction."

Button sets the fastest time so far with a 1:40.794, but that is immediately beaten by Alonso with a 1:39.942.

Hamilton was 0.9 seconds up on Alonso before running very wide. He still went fastest with a 1:39.705.

The times are improving on every lap, Alonso has just set a 1:39.217.

The Red Bulls are a couple of laps behind in their runs on Alonso and Hamilton and are currently about 0.5 seconds off.

Hamilton keeps improving and sets a 1:38.540. But we still haven't seen a soft tyre run.

Hamilton is back in the pits, Kubica is now his nearest rival, 0.226 seconds off. Webber is 0.237 off Hamilton.

The McLarens are now showing their true pace in sector one and are about 0.3 seconds up on the Red Bulls. Alonso is just a tenth or so off the McLarens.

There is quite a lot of graining on the Bridgestones that came off the McLaren. Tyre wear could be crucial this weekend and there is talk of two-stopping in the race.

The new kerb at turn 16 is taking some punishment with Rosberg and Liuzzi sending shockwaves through their chassis by getting a bit greedy and cutting the corner.

Ferrari says: "As expected, the main comment is that the level of grip is very low"

Rosberg is looking very quick this weekend and is just 0.026 off Hamilton.

Force India is also reporting graining: "Both drivers back in garage. Reporting heavy graining on the tyres."

All this tyre wear is good news for Sunday's race and there are still forecasts of rain that would really shake things up.

Hamilton is back out on soft tyres. Button joins him.

Alonso is ready to head out.

A replay shows Hamilton running wide at turn three, just braking a touch too late.

All the cars bar Hulkenberg are out on track for another run on the soft tyres. This will be a qualifying simulation run.

Hamilton gets stuck in traffic and shoots off the circuit at turn 10. He was on a fastest first sector.

Expect traffic to play a big part in qualifying.

Luis says: "Guys , I keep seeing Kubica in the Renault set faster1st sector times that either Red Bull. Given they have the same engines ( supposedly) can we say that the Renault F duct is working better than Red Bull's version ??"

Yep, absolutely.

Kubica goes fastest with a 1:37.932.

It's all kicking off now, Alonso got baulked by Rosberg and almost stops to give him a ticking off. Meanwhile Vettel's car ended up at right angles to the track as he held a huge slide in sector three.

Remarkable lap by Kubica with a 1:37.354. Webber is second fastest just 0.072 off the Renault.

Hamilton beats Webber on his final lap but a mistake in sector three meant he couldn't beat Kubica.

Dave: "Let me see if I understand this: the drivers *asked* for this curb to be installed...and yet some of them are hitting it???"

Yep, but I think they are just testing the limits in this session, it's a mild improvement on yesterday as cutting the corner does not gain an advantage.

Alonso is complaining about Rosberg blocking him, the Mercedes was nearly stationary on the racing line. Possibly a punishment is in order for dangerous driving.

But the big news is that Kubica is fastest ahead of qualifying with an astonishing lap in his Renault.
